Roselyn Akombe is a Kenyan political economist and former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner.
During the mourning of Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka’s mother, he publicly announced that Akombe is her wife and that he will introduce her at the burial on May 15, 2026.
In 2017, after the general elections, Akombe resigned, citing deep internal disagreements within the electoral body and concerns about the credibility and safety of the electoral process.
Roselyn Akombe Family Background and Education
Roselyn Kwamboka Akombe was born in Nyamira County on November 21, 1976, where she spent her early life before advancing her education.
Academically, Akombe holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nairobi where she studied Education.

At the University of Nairobi, Akombe became actively involved in student leadership and activism.
Roselyn participated in demonstrations advocating for environmental protection, including campaigns to save Karura Forest.
She also participated in civic movements calling for constitutional reforms and an end to police brutality during the late years of the one-party political era under President Daniel Arap Moi.
She later advanced her education in the United States at Rutgers University, where she earned both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Global Affairs, with a focus on political economy, governance, and international public policy.
After completing her studies, Akombe joined the Collaborative Center for Gender and Development, where she worked under the mentorship of Profesor Wanjiku Kabira.
She was also involved in advocacy and coordination linked to the drafting and support of the Affirmative Action Bill, which sought to increase women’s participation in leadership and was later passed in Parliament.
Career in Education, Governance and International Service
Akombe’s professional career spans both national and international institutions.
Her early professional journey started at St. Luke’s Ekware Secondary School, where she taught before joining the University of Nairobi.
She taught English and Literature at Kebirigo Secondary School, Kiabonyoru High School, and later Nyabururu Girls High School.
She has worked with global organizations, including the United Nations, where she contributed to governance, peacebuilding, and political affairs in various capacities.
Her work focused on strengthening democratic institutions and supporting political stability in different regions.

In January 2017, she was appointed as a commissioner of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Following the disputed 2017 presidential election, Akombe resigned from her position in October 2017.
After leaving IEBC, she returned to international service, continuing her work in governance and conflict resolution with the United Nations.
