Jose Eduardo dos Santos the former president of Angola, who ruled the country for nearly four decades, has died aged 79.
Jose Eduardo’s death was announced via Facebook on Friday, July 8 by the Angolan presidency.
According to the post, the Angolan former president died at 11:10 am Spanish time at the Barcelona Teknon clinic after a prolonged sickness.
Moreover, Jose Eduardo had been receiving medical treatment since 2019. Similarly, in the previous month, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reported that the former president was admitted to the intensive care unit at a clinic in Barcelona.

Dos Santos, was one of the longest-serving African presidents. However, his rule was marked by a brutal civil war lasting nearly three decades against U.S.-backed UNITA rebels – which he won in 2002 – and a subsequent oil-fueled boom.
Nonetheless, the Angolan Former president resigned from office five years ago. President Joao Lourenco from People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), replaced Dos Santos in 2017.
Furthermore, the current president, has announced five days of national mourning starting on Friday. The Angola national flag will fly at half-staff and public events will be canceled to mark the mourning period.
The late Dos Santos, is survived by his current wife, Ana Paula, and their three children. Moreover, the former president is reported to have been married four times out of which he sired at least three other children and several grandchildren.
