The 2025 World Athletics Championships are set to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to September 21, 2025.

The event will be hosted at the National Stadium, which also served as the venue for the 2021 Summer Olympics.

This edition, which will be the 20th World Athletics Championships since its inception, is expected to feature more than 2,000 athletes from around 200 countries.

The Championships bring together a wide variety of competitions that showcase the best of track and field.

On the track, athletes will compete in sprints such as the 100 metres, 200 metres, and 400 metres, as well as middle-distance races like the 800 metres and 1500 metres.

Long-distance runners will take part in the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres, while hurdle specialists will contest the 100 metres hurdles (women), 110 metres hurdles (men), and 400 metres hurdles.

World Athletics Championships to be Hosted by Japan

The programme also includes the 3000 metres steeplechase and exciting relay races, including the 4×100 metres, 4×400 metres, and mixed 4×400 metres.

Beyond the stadium, the Championships will feature road events such as the marathon and race-walking competitions over 20 kilometres and 35 kilometres.

In the field events, athletes will compete in the jumps, which include high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault—as well as the throws, which include shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin.

For Kenya, some of the top medal prospects include Faith Kipyegon, who is a dominant force in the women’s 1500m and 5000m.

Top Athletes to Participate in the Tournament

She will be aiming to secure her fourth world title in the 1500m alongside Beatrice Chebet, a double Olympic champion in both the 5000m and 10,000m from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, making her one of the top contenders in the distance events.

Another Kenyan to watch is Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the reigning Olympic 800m champion and the second-fastest man in history over the distance, who enters the competition as a favourite for gold.

Besides Kenya, other top athletes who will be present in the tournament include:

  • Grant Holloway (USA) – 110m hurdles
  • Noah Lyles (USA) – Defending champion in 100m & 200m
  • Sha’Carri Richardson (USA) – Women’s 100m champion
