Four people are feared dead and 16 injured after a lorry rammed into multiple vehicles and boda boda operators in the Riverland area of Meru Municipality on Thursday night, October 8, 2026.

The crash involved a lorry that struck other cars and boda boda operators and several pedestrians.

Meru County’s emergency response teams, including personnel from the Departments of Health and Special Programs and the Fire and Rescue Services, were deployed to respond to the crash.

Video footage from the accident scene shows residents working to overturn the lorry that rolled during the accident on October 9.

According to preliminary reports, the lorry reportedly lost its brakes from Makutano, leading to the accident near Rubis petrol station.

Following the accident, Meru County Commissioner George Omollo confirmed that the number of passengers who lost their lives in the multi-vehicle crash remains unknown.

The police later confirmed that 4 people had lost their lives while 16 continued to receive treatment.

Al-Azizia Football Club on October 9 announced that among those who lost their lives was a loyal fan of the club.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the demise of one of our own, Kassim Mohammed (Tommy Lee), a loyal fan who tragically lost his life in the accident at Riverland, Meru Town, last evening,” a statement from the club read.
