All petrol stations and LPG gas plants located near residential estates in Nairobi have been ordered to relocate with immediate effect following the fire at the Total Fourways Petrol Station.
In a statement on April 2, Geoffrey Mosiria, the Nairobi County official in charge of Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, announced that anyone operating a petrol station within or near a residential area must relocate it immediately to a designated, safer zone to prevent potential hazards.
“Anyone who has established a petrol station within or near a residential area should take immediate steps to relocate it to a safer, designated zone to prevent such dangerous occurrences,” Mosiria stated.
Further, he stated that the directive also applies to LPG plants operating illegally in residential neighborhoods and asked the owners to act responsibly by relocating these facilities away from residential areas.
Nairobi County Crackdown on Petrol Stations and LPG Plants
On behalf of the County Government of Nairobi, Mosiria announced plans to intensify inspections of petrol stations and LPG plants, targeting operations deemed high-risk.
“The County Government of Nairobi will now intensify inspections and enforce compliance to ensure that all such high-risk operations are properly regulated,” the statement read.

He confirmed that the move aims to ensure all such facilities comply with safety regulations and operate within designated zones, stating that the crackdown is necessary to protect the lives and property of residents, particularly in areas where these operations are near residential neighborhoods.
Additionally, the enforcement measures will include monitoring, regulatory compliance checks, and the potential relocation of facilities that fail to meet safety standards, with the goal of preventing avoidable accidents and fires.
Fire Breaks Out at Total Fourways Station Along Kiambu Road

A night fire at a Total petrol station in Nairobi was reported, with emergency response teams deployed to contain the situation.
According to a statement recorded by the Kenya Red Cross Society at around 9.50 PM, the fire incident occurred at Total Fourways Petrol Station along Kiambu Road.
“A fire outbreak has been reported at a Total Fourways Station along Kiambu Road. Emergency response teams at the scene are working to contain the situation,” the Kenya Red Cross Nairobi Branch noted.
The authorities confirmed that emergency responders were at the scene at the time of reporting, working to control the fire and prevent further damage.
