The Nairobi City County Government has warned residents of ongoing overflooding caused by heavy rainfall.
In an update dated March 6, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stated that the County’s Disaster Management and Risk Department has fully mobilized personnel and resources, urging residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.
“The Nairobi City County Government wishes to update members of the public on the current rainfall situation and the comprehensive measures currently in place to safeguard lives and property across the capital. Nairobi City County Disaster Management and Risk Department has fully mobilized all available resources and personnel to manage the situation urging residents to remain vigilant, prioritize their safety, and utilize the emergency hotlines provided,” read part of the statement.
Further, a Multi-Sectoral Disaster and Flood Mitigation Committee has been activated to provide 24-hour monitoring and rapid response.
According to the county management, teams from the “Green Army” and the Mobility and Works sector have been deployed across all 17 sub-counties to de-silt drains and clear blocked drainage systems.
The County is also coordinating with the Kenya National Highways Authority and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority to keep major roads motorable by clearing debris, fallen trees, and drainage blockages.
In addition, emergency teams are conducting rescue operations in affected areas, supported by Fire and Disaster Management units and a multi-agency team, including the National Police Service and the Kenya Red Cross Society, which is coordinating field responses.
They have identified low-lying areas at risk of flooding, with temporary evacuation centers equipped with essential supplies set up for residents in high-risk zones.

For emergencies, residents can contact the county’s 24-hour dispatch center on 020 2222181, 020 2223182, 020 2222183, or 020 2344599.
Residents are urged to avoid crossing swollen rivers or flooded roads, stay away from downed power lines, and report blocked drains or infrastructure damage via the emergency contact lines.

The County advised the public to cooperate with authorities as it implements measures to safeguard lives and property across Nairobi.
This comes after the government directed all sub-counties to set up public information desks, emergency response, and assistance centres as heavy rains and floods wreak havoc across the country.

Safety Measures
Nairobi residents have been advised to move to higher ground and evacuate immediately if flooding begins in their area.
Residents should avoid walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters, as even shallow moving water can be dangerous.
If water enters homes or buildings, electricity should be turned off at the main switch to prevent electrocution.
The public is also urged to stay away from riverbanks, drainage channels, and flooded roads during heavy rains.
While motorists should avoid driving through flooded roads, as just 30 centimeters of moving water can sweep a vehicle away.
