Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited is one of Kenya’s oldest industrial companies, with a history stretching back to 1911 when it was established as Magadi Soda Company.
The company operates at Lake Magadi in Kajiado County, about 120 kilometers southwest of Nairobi, where it extracts trona, a naturally occurring mineral, and processes it into soda ash and salt.
Additionally, the company produces several grades of salt for industrial and other uses.
According to the company, the Magadi operation is Africa’s largest soda ash manufacturer and one of Kenya’s leading exporters.
More than 95 percent of its products are exported to markets including Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, and the Middle East.
However, its operations have now attracted renewed national attention following President William Ruto’s September 2026 directive that Tata Chemicals cease operations in Kenya.
According to President Ruto, the company has been operating at Lake Magadi without making sufficient investments for residents of Kajiado County.
“We have Lake Magadi, we have a big company, and we have resources that can change Kajiado County and Kenya as a whole. Tata Chemicals Company, which is here in Kajiado, has been running its contract for over 100 years,” Ruto stated during an address in Kajiado on September 3.
Who Owns Tata Chemicals Magadi
Tata Chemicals Magadi is part of a corporate chain run by the Tata Family.
The Kenyan company is a subsidiary of Tata Chemicals Limited, an Indian publicly listed chemicals company that is part of the wider Tata Group, one of India’s largest business groups.
Tata’s corporate structure centers around Tata Sons, the principal investment holding company and promoter of Tata companies.
About 66 percent of Tata Sons is owned by charitable trusts linked to the Tata Group, founded by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in India in 1868.
After the establishment, the group expanded into industries including steel, automobiles, technology, chemicals, hotels, consumer products, and aviation.
Ratan Tata served as the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons after assuming the position in 1991 and led the group through major international expansion before retiring as chairman in 2012.
Under his leadership, Tata companies expanded their international footprint through major acquisitions and investments.
Among the best-known transactions associated with his era were Tata Steel’s acquisition of Corus and Tata Motors’ acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover.
Ratan Tata died in October 2024 at the age of 86.
Today, the Tata companies operate internationally through numerous separately governed businesses, including Tata Chemicals.

Tata Chemicals Magadi History
The business began in 1911 as Magadi Soda Company and later became part of Brunner Mond, a British chemicals company.
Brunner Mond subsequently became part of Imperial Chemical Industries, commonly known as ICI, before the Kenyan soda ash business eventually returned to the Brunner Mond structure.
Tata Chemicals acquired Brunner Mond Group in December 2005, bringing the Magadi operation into the Tata Chemicals family.
In 2011, the Kenyan operation was renamed Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited, the same year it celebrated 100 years of soda ash production.
Today, the company is one of the major international operations and employs more than 600 people.
Historical Tata records show that the operation employed about 680 people when it marked its centenary in 2011.
At that time, the company reported annual soda ash production of about 600,000 tonnes and described Magadi as a significant foreign-exchange earner for Kenya.
Investments in Modernization
Tata Chemicals Magadi has continued to invest in modernizing its operations.
In 2025, the company commissioned an electric calciner plant, an industry-first project intended to accelerate its move toward carbon neutrality and reduce the environmental footprint of soda ash production.
In 2011, Tata announced a $100 million premium ash plant at Magadi as part of an expansion program.
