President William Ruto on September 19 appointed Douglas Kanja as the Inspector General of police (IG) after the resignation of Japhet Koome.
Earlier, Ruto had appointed Kanja in acting capacity, before he handed over to Gilbert Masengeli during the vetting process.
“HIS EXCELLENCY Hon. William Samoei Ruto, PhD, CGH, President and Commander in Chief of the Defense forces, has on this 12th day of July 2024, accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, as the Inspector General of the National Police Service.
To facilitate the transition within the top leadership of the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Prisons Service (KPS), our primary homeland security agencies, the Head of State and Government has issued Executive Order No. 7 of 2024,” read part of the statement from State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Friday, July 12.
Douglas Kanja ‘s Profile
Before his appointment, Kanja was serving as the Deputy IG of the Kenya Police Service (NPS).
Parliament approved his appointment on September 18.

Kanja’s journey to the top management of the NPS started in 1988. Through hard work and commitment, he gradually rose through the ranks.
Previously, Kanja served as in various capacities including as the commandant of the General Service Unit since 2018 where he succeeded Stephen Chelimo in 2018.
He also served as the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI)and also held the position of the Commandant of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU).
Additionally, he held the position of Director of Operations at the National Police Service (NPS) and worked in different parts of the country including Nairobi, Coast, Eastern, and Rift Valley regions.
During his tenure as the commander of GSU, the unit’s elite, the Recce Squad managed to rescue over 100 individuals in the Dusit terror attack.

Earlier, the new Inspector general of police, served as Kilifi County Police boss. He had also acted as the chief armorer for the Kenya Police Service-led Operation Rejesha Amani in Isiolo and Marasbit counties and Operation Fagia Msitu in Boni Forest.
Lastly, he managed the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County.
