The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of comedian Eric Omondi.
According to DCI, Omondi was arrested today, Friday June 5 2026. at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) over connection with offences committed under the guise of the recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi.
Detectives said the arrest follows ongoing investigations in which several other suspects linked to the same incidents were previously arrested and subsequently arraigned in court on 18th May 2026.
“Following credible intelligence, detectives from DCI Central, working jointly with CRIB Nairobi Region, arrested the suspect in connection with offences committed under the guise of the recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi,” DCI said.
“He is currently recording his statement at the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters as he is being processed for arraignment.”
Earlier, in a Facebook post on Friday, June 5, Omondi announced that he had been arrested by eight non-uniformed men.
He added that he was not aware of where they were taking him following the arrest.
“Just been arrested by a group of 8 non-uniformed men. I have no idea where we are headed,” read a post on Eric Omondi’s Facebook page.
By the time of publishing, the reason for his arrest had not been established and either the police nor his family have issued a formal statementregarding the alleged arrest.

The arrest comes after the comedian has in recent weeks been involved in various protest campaigns, including demonstrations against the recent hike in fuel prices by the government.
On Monday, May 18, the Comedian escalated his protest against rising fuel prices, storming Nairobi’s Central Business District with a lorry loaded with empty yellow jerricans, which he offloaded onto the streets.

Omondi arrived in a lorry whose rear section had been opened before beginning to offload the empty containers onto the ground while addressing supporters and passers-by.
“Eeeh ni hivi, na kama hamtapunguza bei next week Monday ni total shutdown till Sunday. Monday to Sunday,” he said during the demonstration.
“Usiogope, weka hizi chini bro, toa tu,” he added as he continued dropping the jerricans, which he said symbolized the hardship facing ordinary Kenyans.
He later linked the empty containers to the daily struggles of citizens, saying the current economic situation had left many households drained.

The crowd that gathered around him joined in chants of “punguza mafuta”, briefly disrupting movement along sections of the CBD as security officers monitored the protest.
The protest came days after Omondi staged a roadside demonstration where he dragged a chain of empty jerricans near a petrol station to highlight the rising cost of living following fuel price increases announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
In that protest, Omondi had criticized the high cost of living, saying Kenyans were struggling to afford basic needs.
