National Assembly Speaker has given strict orders to the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja following the death of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were who was shot dead on Wednesday April 30 along Ngong Road.
In a statement announcing the death of the MP, Wetangula described Ong’ondo as affable, humble and non-confrontational. He directed the police boss to speedily unravel the death of the lawmaker.
“In this regard, Honourable Members, I have since instructed the Inspector-General of Police to expeditiously but thoroughly investigate the incident and report the findings to the House immediately, through my Office.
Further, the Inspector-General of Police is required to enhance the security of all Kenyans, especially the security of our national leaders,” directed Wetangula.
How MP Died
According to preliminary reports, the lawmaker was gunned down around City Mortuary roundabout.
It was also reported that the MP was shot by two men riding on a motorcycle.
His body was moved to the Nairobi Hospital, which is a few meters from the scene of the shooting.
Following the shooting, several legislators and top government officials rushed to the hospital.
ODM Party in a statement said the MP was killed moments after leaving Parliament.
Kasipul MP Eulogized
“We have received with shock and disbelief the tragic death of the Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were-MP Kaspul at the hands of a gunman along Ngong road Nairobi this evening. Hon. Were was in parliament the better part of the day and left at 6:15 pm after participating in business of the day,” read part of the statement.

It added, “While we join his constituents, the people of the great county of Homabay, his family, colleagues and friends in mourning, we call on the police to investigate the shooting incident and bring the culprits to book.”
The speaker of the national Assembly Moses Wetangula eulogized the late Were as a distinguished legislator, a fearless advocate for his constituents, and “a man deeply committed to the democratic ideals and service to the people he represented.”At the same time, Wetangula termed his demise as a huge loss to Kenya.
“The loss of Hon. Were is not just a tragedy to his family and the people of Kasipul but also a big loss to the people of Kenya.
As we mourn our departed dear friend and colleague, I call upon our security and investigative agencies to undertake thorough investigations to bring to book those responsible for this heinous and cowardly act,” said Wetangula.
MPs shocked by Ong’ondo’s death
Some of Were’s colleagues recounted their last moments with the lawmaker.
“I was with my colleague just this afternoon in parliament, chatted, laughed, and he told me I need a conversation with you, “mambo si mazuri.” His exact words. Five hours later, he is no more. The news is shocking,” recalled Saboti MP Caleb Amisi.
Kirinyaga Women representative Maina Njeri was yet to come to terms with the passing on of Ong’ondo. She stated, “I haven’t quite found the words to mourn my colleague and vice-chairperson; Hon. Charles Ong’ ondo Were.”
“My heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Hon. Ong’ondo Were. May he rest in eternal peace,” said Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi.
Before his death, Ong’ondo had raised concerns that his life was in danger.
The MP was first elected to Parliament in 2017 on an ODM ticket.
He successfully defended his seat during the 2022 general election.
