The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) on Thursday, October 19 issued an update on the purchase of electricity tokens indicating that the matter had been resolved.
Further, the power company in a statement said customers were able to purchase tokens apologizing for the inconvenience caused.
” We are glad to inform you that the prepaid system hitch has been resolved and customers can now purchase electricity tokens,” stated KPLC.
KPLC had warned Kenyans of a system hitch affecting the generation of electricity tokens.
Token Hitch
In a statement on Thursday morning, the power company stated that the issue was affecting only their prepaid services.
Further, Kenya Power apologized to its customers promising to restore the matter as soon as possible.
KPLC, stated that the issue was affecting all Kenya Power customers countrywide purchasing tokens using M-Pesa.
“We are experiencing a hitch on the prepaid system which is affecting the generation of electricity tokens.
“We are working to restore normalcy within the shortest time possible,” stated the company.

Earlier Complaints to KPLC
Earlier in the day, Kenyans raised concerns about being unable to purchase electricity tokens from the power distributor.
According to screenshots of transactions shared online, users received a message from Safaricom noting that the “transaction failed and M-Pesa cannot complete the payment to KPLC prepaid.”
The message also indicated that the organization’s systems received the payment experienced some technical challenges asking users to try the transaction at a later time.
Further, many customers lamented that the issue had persisted for days adding that they had not been able to purchase electricity tokens since the beginning of the week.
Because of the inconvenience, many were forced to stay in the dark.
Buying Tokens Through M-Pesa
Although there are many ways to purchase electricity tokens, the most common way is through M-Pesa.
You can purchase tokens through your M-Pesa by selecting Lipa na M-PESA on your app and selecting the Pay bill option.
Proceed to enter the business number 888888 for postpaid and 888880 for prepaid tokens and your 11-digit prepaid meter number as the account number.
When that is done, enter the amount you wish to purchase and your M-Pesa pin to confirm your payment.

Buying Tokens Through Bonga Points
Another way of purchasing tokens is through redeeming your bonga points. You can do this by dialing *126#, selecting ‘Lipa Na Bonga Points’ and selecting Pay Bill option.
You can then proceed to enter the business number 888888 for postpaid and 888880 for prepaid tokens. Enter account or meter number and then enter the amount you want to pay.
To purchase tokens worth Ksh500, you will be required to have 2,500 bonga points.

Buying Tokens Through KPLC Agents
For this method, you have to physically visit KPLC agent shops locate in various locations across the country to purchase tokens.
The agent will require you to submit your meter number and the amount you wish to spend to purchase tokens. When successful, the agent will give you the tokens reference number and a confirmation of payment.
In return, agents make a commission depending on the transaction number.
Buying Tokens Through Banks
At the same time, there is a provision for you to but tokens through your mobile banking.
Depending on the banking app you use, you can be able to purchase tokens through their provided USSD or procedure.
