President Donald Trump has nominated seasoned diplomat Henry Wooster as the next United States ambassador to Kenya, the White House announced on June 1.
In a statement, the White House confirmed that Wooster, a senior career diplomat from Virginia, has been nominated for the position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Kenya.
“Henry Wooster, of Virginia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Kenya,” the statement read.
Wooster brings decades of diplomatic experience to the nomination, having served in various senior roles within the US State Department.

His nomination awaits Senate confirmation, a process that will determine whether he formally takes up the posting in Nairobi.
If approved, Wooster will take charge of one of Washington’s key diplomatic missions in Africa.

Henry Wooster is an accomplished American diplomat and career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, holding the rank of Minister-Counselor.
He currently serves as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, a position he has held since June 2025, where he leads a whole-of-government approach to addressing the country’s security and stability challenges.

Prior to this assignment, he was Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and served as U.S. Ambassador to Jordan from 2020 to 2023.
His extensive overseas experience includes roles as Deputy Chief of Mission in Paris, Chargé d’Affaires and Political Counselor in Amman and Islamabad, and earlier postings in Moscow, Baghdad, and Tbilisi.
Before joining the Foreign Service in 1991, Wooster served as a U.S. Army officer, including time in Special Forces.
Wooster holds a Bachelor’s degree from Amherst College and a Master’s degree from Yale University.
Throughout his career, he has tackled complex national security issues, including Washington assignments as Director for Central Asia at the National Security Council, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Commanding General of U.S. Joint Special Operations Command, and several senior roles focused on Iran policy.
