Helicopter arrivals at public events continue to attract attention in Kenya, with businessman Kenyan Prince (Raymond Omosa) recently making headlines after landing by helicopter for a lavish public apology to his girlfriend, Stephanie “Stephy” Ngunjiri.

The grand gesture, which featured a decorated lakeside venue and elaborate displays, reignited public curiosity about the cost of hiring a helicopter for private events.

This high-profile appearance has prompted many Kenyans to ask how much it costs to charter a helicopter, with prices varying depending on the aircraft type, route, flight duration, and intended use.

What Are the Helicopter Rates in Kenya

Monolith Africa, a heavy-equipment marketplace and information platform that connects buyers, contractors, and dealers across Africa, confirms that although helicopter charters cost more than traveling by road or on scheduled commercial flights, they provide a faster and more flexible travel option, particularly where time, convenience, and access to remote locations are important.

“Helicopter charters are becoming increasingly popular in Kenya among tourists, business executives, conservation teams, photographers, and high-net-worth travelers,” they stated.

They are widely used for transfers to destinations such as the Maasai Mara, site inspections in remote areas, aerial photography assignments and private safari experiences.

Unlike commercial airlines, which operate on fixed timetables and limited routes, helicopter charters offer direct point-to-point travel.

The cost of hiring a helicopter depends on several factors. The most important factor is the type of aircraft selected. Larger helicopters with greater passenger capacity and advanced features typically command higher charter rates.

Other factors that influence pricing include:

  • Flight duration
  • Distance travelled
  • Number of passengers
  • Landing permissions
  • Crew requirements
  • Fuel costs
  • Weather conditions
  • Remote location access

A short scenic flight around Nairobi will cost significantly less than a charter to a remote safari lodge or conservation area.

Below are helicopter rates in Kenya;

Helicopter Passenger Capacity Estimated Charter Rate (USD) Approx. Hourly Hire (KSh)
Bell 206 Jet Ranger 3 Passengers USD 1,500 per hour KSh 194,100 per hour
Robinson R66 3 Passengers USD 1,900 per hour KSh 245,860 per hour
Airbus AS350 B3 5 Passengers USD 2,000 per hour KSh 258,800 per hour
Bell 407 5 Passengers USD 2,150 per hour KSh 278,110 per hour
Airbus H130 5 Passengers USD 2,350 per hour KSh 304,090 per hour

Most helicopters accommodate between three and five passengers, offering direct access to destinations across the country.

Commonly chartered helicopter types include:

  • Robinson R66 – A three-passenger helicopter commonly used for private charters and short-distance travel.
  • Bell 206 Jet Ranger – A three-passenger aircraft popular for regional flights and scenic trips.
  • Bell 407 – A five-passenger helicopter widely used for executive travel and luxury safari transfers.
  • Airbus AS350 B3 – A five-passenger helicopter known for its versatility and performance across different terrains.
  • Airbus H130 – A five-passenger aircraft offering a spacious cabin, making it suitable for VIP transport and sightseeing flights.

Among these models, the Bell 206 is commonly chosen for shorter regional journeys, while the Bell 407 is frequently preferred for executive travel and safari charters because of its larger cabin and enhanced performance.

“The Bell 206 remains popular for short regional trips, while the Bell 407 is often preferred for safari and executive travel due to its larger cabin and enhanced performance,” explains Bamm Tours and Safaris.

Popular Helicopter Safari Destinations

Monolith Africa notes that helicopter charters are widely used for safari travel, offering direct access to some of Kenya’s top wildlife and scenic destinations while significantly reducing travel time.

Popular helicopter safari destinations include:

  • Maasai Mara
  • Samburu
  • Laikipia
  • Amboseli
  • Lake Turkana
  • Mount Kenya
  • Tsavo

In addition to faster travel, helicopter safaris provide panoramic aerial views of Kenya’s landscapes, wildlife and natural attractions, making the flight itself a key part of the overall experience.
