East Africa’s wealth landscape highlights a clear contrast between Kenya’s broader base of millionaires and Tanzania’s concentration of wealth at the very top.
Recent wealth reports show Kenya ranking among Africa’s top five countries by number of millionaires, while Tanzania remains notable for producing the only dollar billionaire in East and Central Africa.
According to the Africa Wealth Report 2025, Kenya is ranked 1st in East Africa, 5th in Africa in terms of individuals worth at least USD 1 million, with about 6,800 millionaires, while Tanzania is ranked 12th with 2,100 millionaires and 3rd in East Africa.
Wealth in both countries is largely driven by industries such as manufacturing, banking, retail, agriculture, and real estate.
