The probe into the murder of slain popular Ohangla dancer Sheila Odoyo, also known as Sheila Wegesha by her stage name, has taken a new twist after police launched a manhunt for her husband.

Wegesha was found murdered in their matrimonial home on Thursday, May 9, 2024, with deep cuts on her throat.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers in Athi River, Machakos County, while speaking to the press on Friday, May 10, 2024, said that a manhunt has since been launched for the husband as investigations into the gruesome murder intensify.

Slain 38-year-old Wegesha was found in a pool of blood on her bed in the posh Hill View Estate after her 18-year-old daughter reported the matter to the police.

Wegesha’s daughter told the detectives that she learnt of her mother’s death on Thursday when she went to serve her lunch.

She informed the detectives that her father had left home at about 1.am on Thursday in a Mitsubishi Outlander vehicle, without saying a word.

Wegesha’s Husband on the run

“The information that we were able to gather is that the husband to the deceased had left the homestead at around 1 a.m. using the family motor vehicle. By the time of leaving, it is suspected that most probably he fled after the incident had been committed. So, the suspect in this case we strongly believe is the husband,” said Wesley Langat, DCI Athi River officer.

Police further revealed that they were able to track down the vehicle following the confession by the daughter that her father left the homestead late in the night.

According to the report, the vehicle was later traced by detectives to a car park within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) next to Kencom bus stage.

The suspect is reported to have parked the car at around 2.30am and gave the night attendant who recorded a statement with the detectives, a Ksh450 amount as parking fees.

In the statement recorded by the parking attendant, the suspect is reported to have also left the car keys before leaving with three bags.

“We were able to trace the motor vehicle through an installed tracking device. We were also able to establish that the husband left the said motor vehicle but, in his possession, he had three bags which could have been having his personal belongings and proceeded towards Afya center,” the police added.

The Athi River DCIO boss further revealed that the suspect’s last phone signal was recorded in Narok at around 6.26am before his phone went off.

According to the detectives, the phone signal is an indication that Wegesha’s husband may have fled towards the Western or Nyanza region.

The police have maintained that they are on high alert to put the suspect into custody for purposes of processing him for possible charges.

“We are tracking him. He is the main suspect, he may run but he will never hide,” said Langat.

Wegesha is said to have owned a liquor store in Umoja estate, which she ran with the help of her husband.

Her lifeless body was found lying on a bed in her bedroom with blood on the mattress and a deep cut visible on her throat.

She was a widely known figure in the popular Ohangla dance clubs within Nairobi and its environs.

Following her death, diehard fans mourned the slain dancer on social media which was awash with her photos and the husband in a jovial mood.

The body has been taken to the Shalom Community Hospital mortuary as investigations intensify.
