Moses Gibson, a 41-year-old man from Minnesota, recently made headlines for his decision to undergo painful surgery to grow five inches taller.
Gibson, who initially stood at 5 feet 5 inches, said he felt insecure about his height and struggled to find a girlfriend due to “heightism.” In an interview with the New York Post, he said, “I just didn’t feel good about myself. I was unhappy about it most of the time.”
Searching for a Solution
To address his concerns, Gibson initially tried medication and sought help from a spiritual healer, but neither option worked. Frustrated, he decided to save for leg-lengthening surgery, which he hoped would help him feel more confident and secure. Over time, Gibson saved $75,000 from his work as a software engineer during the day and an Uber driver at night.

The Surgery Process
Gibson underwent his first leg lengthening surgery in 2016. The procedure added three inches to his height, making him 5 feet 8 inches tall. While happy with the results, he still wanted to grow taller. “After the first procedure, I was happy with it to some extent, but it was always in my mind that I wanted to do a second one to complete it,” he said.
Gibson underwent a second surgery in March 2023, where doctors broke his tibia and fibula bones and inserted magnetic, limb-lengthening nails into them. The procedure is risky and painful, with potential complications such as poor bone formation, fracture, infection, bone lengthening at an inappropriate rate, and blood clots.
Gibson must use a height-lengthening device three times a day to pull his cut bone apart a millimeter at a time. However, he hopes to grow two inches taller and be five feet ten inches tall by June.
A Boost in Confidence
According to Gibson, the first surgery already boosted his confidence with women, and he now has a girlfriend and wears shorts and full-body pictures without shame. He says that he feels more comfortable in his own skin now and that he’s happy with the progress he’s made. “In my mind, when I’m done with this part, I can just be free,” he said. “I just won’t care about my height anymore. I’ll be satisfied with what I have.”
While Gibson’s experience is unique, he hopes it will inspire others to be confident in themselves and pursue what makes them happy. “I’d advise anybody who wants this to go for it — it’s definitely worth it,” he said. “I’m definitely wanting to spread the word, and if it can help other people go through it, then so be it; I’m glad.”
However, it’s important to remember that leg lengthening surgery is a risky and painful procedure that should only be considered after careful consideration and consultation with medical professionals.
