Ugandan Chief of Defense Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba Museveni, has confirmed that he will succeed his father, Yoweri Museveni, as the president.
On his social media account, General Muhoozi assured Ugandans on June 17 that after the presidential succession, he would follow in the footsteps of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba is aiming to become the 10th president of Uganda if, during the next elections, voters support his bid for the presidency.
“Thank you for your support. I will definitely follow my great father, Mzee, in the big chair,” Muhoozi stated.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba Presidential Bid
In 2024, the 52-year-old General declared that he would run for the presidential seat in 2026, as he wanted to focus on the military, and endorsed President Yoweri Museveni, who won the re-election.
However, following Muhoozi’s declaration to succeed his father, the newly appointed coordinator of the patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Fadil Twalla, has expressed his support for the presidential bid by the General.
Fadil Twalla was appointed following the restructuring of the PLU Central Committee on June 15, when Museveni’s son replaced the long-serving Secretary-General, David Kabanda.
According to the PLU General Secretary, Fadil Twalla, Uganda is ready to welcome and support the leadership of Muhoozi Kainerugaba after Yoweri Museveni.

The former PLU General Secretary and member of parliament for Kasambya County, David Kabanda, has also affirmed his support for Muhoozi taking over as the 10th Ugandan President.
However, his support has sparked mixed public opinion, with some members of the public stating that Kabanda has no right to decide for the country because he is uneducated.
Ruly Davids Eyoku called upon Kabanda to seek higher learning before involving himself in the presidential matters of the country.
In addition, some mentioned that his public declaration of support for Muhoozi’s presidential bid was a plan to win favor with the general following his recent replacement in PLU.

Public Support on Museveni’s Succession
Most members of the public have stated that they are ready to support Muhoozi, citing that the general has established major successful operations that have been beneficial to the Ugandans.
Further, some of his supporters have urged the General to ensure that reforms are made to the justice system once in office.
In addition, supporters have called on Muhoozi to ensure that, during his reign, he fights corruption in the country, citing the current president, Yoweri Museveni, as having failed to deal with it to the country’s satisfaction.
Despite strong support, some members of the public have affirmed that they do not support Muhoozi’s succession to Museveni, adding that his leadership is not desirable.

Muhoozi Political Strategy
In his political run to succeed Museveni, he reaffirmed that, upon the return of his political opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, famously known as Bobi Wine, Kyagulanyi will be arrested.
According to Muhoozi, Bobi Wine will be arrested upon his return from his holiday tour in the US, despite the opposition leader’s alleged plea to the president not to arrest him.
“Kabobina has been BEGGING Mzee that we don’t arrest him when he returns from his holiday in the US. I’m now swearing that we shall definitely arrest him,” General Muhoozi declared.
Political rivalry between Muhoozi and Bobi Wine followed a post-election confrontation in January 2026, in which Bobi Wine rejected the election results, alleging irregularities.
In response, the general issued ultimatums to Bobi Wine and his party, threatening their elimination, which he later denied.
