Bunyore Girls High School is a national girls’ secondary school located in Emuhaya Constituency, Vihiga County.
Established in 1905 by the Cramer Missionaries from South Africa as a commercial training centre for girls, the school has grown into an academic giant in the region, with a student population of over 1,200 and a strong reputation for excellence in science and overall academic performance.
When it was established, early education focused on needlework, arithmetic, religion, English, and vernacular, with a strong emphasis on Christian discipline and domestic skills.
Girls lived together in a communal Christian setting and often taught Sunday school in nearby villages.
In 1930, under the leadership of Mrs. Twyla Ludwig, the institution was renamed from Kima Girls School to Bunyore Girls School, a move that marked a significant shift from missionary ownership to local identity and cultural relevance.
By 1944, Bunyore had grown into a fully-fledged primary and intermediate school, temporarily incorporating a nearby boys’ school.

However, the boys were relocated in 1952 to form what is today Kima Primary School, leaving Bunyore to continue its journey as a girls-only institution.
In 1964, the school transitioned into a full secondary school, with the first Form Four candidates graduating in 1967.
Among its long-serving leaders was Priscilla Were, who served as principal for 17 years beginning in 1974, playing a vital role in shaping the school’s growth and identity.
The school has also nurtured notable alumni, including Alice Amwomo Wako, mother of former Attorney-General Amos Wako. A passionate educator, she taught at Bunyore alongside her husband, Daniel Wako.

The ‘A’ level stream at Bunyore Girls High School was phased out in 1989 following the nationwide shift to Kenya’s 8-4-4 education system. Since then, student admissions were determined by performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.
In 2023, the KCPE was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework, marking another significant transition in the country’s education system.
Throughout these changes, Bunyore Girls High School has consistently expanded in both size and academic performance.
The school regularly posts stellar results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and often ranks among the top 200 schools nationally. In the 2022 KCSE, the candidates scored a mean score of 8.61.
Recognized as a Cluster One (I) national school, Bunyore is among a select group of institutions designated by the Ministry of Education for their exceptional infrastructure, academic performance, and human resource capacity.

The Ministry of Education, through its 2020 guidelines, categorized national schools into four clusters, each with specified annual fee limits. Bunyore Girls falls under Cluster One, with an official annual fee cap of approximately Ksh75,798 per student.

However, actual fees may slightly vary depending on additional levies approved by the school’s Board of Management (BoM).
