Kenyatta High School, Mahiga is a boys’ secondary school in Othaya, Nyeri County, Kenya.
It traces its origins to the pre-independence period, when it was founded in the Kagere area in Mahiga Location.
The school emerged from community-led self-help efforts aimed at providing education to learners excluded by the colonial system, which was marked by segregation and limited access for communities viewed as opposed to colonial rule.
The institution was initially established as Kagere High School and later became Mahiga High School.
Kenyatta High School Mahiga History
Its operations were halted in 1952 after the declaration of the State of Emergency, when colonial authorities deregistered the school on claims that its founders had links to, or sympathies with, the Mau Mau liberation movement.
Following Kenya’s independence, the school was revived in 1965 and welcomed its first Form One students in May 1966.
It was formally opened on March 30, 1969, by Minister of State Mbiu Koinange and renamed Kenyatta High School (Mahiga) in honour of the country’s first President.
