Kirinyaga University (KyU) is located approximately 115 Km Northeast of Nairobi in Kutus, Kirinyaga County, on the Sagana-Embu Highway.
The higher-learning institution is the successor to Kirinyaga Technical Institute which was founded back in 1971 when the late former President Daniel Arap Moi (then Vice-president) launched a fundraising drive “Harambee” at the request of Kirinyaga people.

Kirinyaga University College, the predecessor to KyU, was established as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology (JKUAT) through Legal Order No. 108 of August 2011.
Kirinyaga University was granted charter by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on October 7, 2016, with 13 academic degree programs, and has since increased the number of academic degree programs.
