Kirinyaga University: Courses Offered, Fees, Location and Campuses

Kirinyaga University (KyU) is located approximately 115 Km Northeast of Nairobi in Kutus, Kirinyaga County, on the Sagana-Embu Highway.

The higher-learning institution is the successor to Kirinyaga Technical Institute which was founded back in 1971 when the late former President Daniel Arap Moi (then Vice-president) launched a fundraising drive “Harambee” at the request of Kirinyaga people.

Kirinyaga University College, the predecessor to KyU, was established as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology (JKUAT) through Legal Order No. 108 of August 2011.

Kirinyaga University was granted charter by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on October 7, 2016, with 13 academic degree programs, and has since increased the number of academic degree programs.

The current Vice Chancellor of KyU is Professor Mary Wambui Ndung’u.

The university has 4 schools and one department offering various courses under doctorate, master’s, bachelor’s, diplomas and certificates.

These include the Schools of Business & Education, Health Sciences, Pure & Applied Sciences, Engineering & Technology, and the Department of Textile Technology.

School of Business and Education

KyU offers various degree programs in this school such as Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Management, Bachelor of Procurement and Supplies Management, Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Economics and Finance, Bachelor of Economics and Statistics, Bachelor of Economics and Mathematics, Bachelor of Economics and Global Business Studies, Bachelor of Technology Education, Bachelor of Education (Science) and Bachelor of Education (Arts).

Post-Graduate Diploma in Education, Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration, MSc. Logistics and Supplies Chain Management, Masters of Business Administration, and Masters of Economics are also offered in this school.

Environmental Health, BSc. Medical Microbiology, BSc. Community Health & Development, BSc. Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, BTech. Medical Engineering, BSc. Health Information & Informatics and BSc. Health Systems Management.

Others include Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical ventilation and air conditioning, Bachelor of Technology in Renewable Energy, Bachelor of Technology in Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Bachelor of Technology in Telecommunication and Information Engineering, Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering, Bachelor of Technology in Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Post graduate courses on the other hand include Master of Science in Construction Management, and Master of Science in Renewable Energy.

The fee per year for undergraduate courses at KyU ranges between Ksh183,600 and Ksh306,000, varying depending on the courses pursued.

For instance, the fee structure for Health Sciences-related undergraduate courses such as BSc. Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, BSc. Forensic Science, BSc. Medical Biotechnology, Bachelor of Education Science, Bachelor of Technical Education, Bachelor of Economics & Statistics and BSc. Health Systems Management is Ksh244,800 for year 1.

Undergraduate fees for students in Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Business Management, Bachelor of Procurement and Supplies Management, Bachelor of Economics and Finance, Bachelor of Science (Mathematics and Economics), Bachelor of Education Arts on the other hand is Ksh183,600 for year 1.

Other fee structures

In addition, undergraduate fees for students in Bachelor of Technology (Telecommunication and Information), Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Technology in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Technology in Water, Sanitation and Habitat Engineering, and Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management is Ksh306,000.

The same fee also applies for Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), BSc. Information Technology, BSc. Computer Systems Engineering, and BSc. Software Engineering.

Year 1 undergraduate fees for students in BSc. (Nursing), BSc. Clinical Medicine & Community Health, Bachelor of Technology in Water, Irrigation and Environmental, and Bachelor of Technology in Renewable Energy is Ksh275,400.
