Loreto High School Limuru is a national girls’ school in Limuru Sub-County, Kiambu County. The school was founded in 1936 by the Loreto sisters who had travelled from Ireland.
Sisters Teresa Joseph O’Sullivan, Dolores Stafford and Veronica Bradley were the pioneers.

They arrived in Kenya in 1921 as Catholic missionaries to improve educational opportunities for girls in the area.
The original vision of the school’s founders was to educate African girls who, at that time, were denied the right to an academic education.

The school started with a population of 7 girls, and the first two students who sat for the senior Cambridge certificate examination in 1954 registered excellent performance.
These pioneers started a record of excellence in national examinations, which the institution has maintained to date.

Loreto High School Limuru has grown to the current 7-stream institution with a student population of over 1500.
The most recent accomplishment was the completion of a four-storey dormitory building with a capacity of 400 students.
The school has been ranked 1st position in the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi both in academics and holistic education.

Loreto Limuru has a well-established information communication technology (ICT) infrastructure which supports both curriculum and co-curriculum well-being of the entire school entity.
The fruits of education given by Loreto Limuru are visible throughout the country and indeed globally from the contributions of its alumni.
The school has produced a distinguished alumni including doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, teachers, accountants, wonderful mothers and many other outstanding role models.
They include Chief Justice Martha Koome and the late Nobel Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai.
Loreto Limuru has consistently performed well in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
Performance
In the 2023 KCSE, the school had 266 candidates, with 92% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

8 students scored a straight A, while 78 scored an A-. Additionally, 69 students attained a B+, 46 scored a B, while 32 managed a B-.
14 students scored a C+, 15 scored a C, and the lowest grade recorded was a D, obtained by just one student.
The school’s impressive performance saw the 2023 candidates achieve a mean score of 9.46.
School Fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Loreto Limuru Girls was placed in Cluster Three (III), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
