Limuru Girls School ranks among Kenya’s top national public girls’ secondary schools. It was founded in 1922 by Arnold Buttler McDonell for his four daughters and other girls interested in joining.
McDonell’s governess became the school’s first Headmistress, while his eldest daughter, Evelyn Mitchell, being its first student.

In 1926, he sold the school along with 60 acres of the surrounding farm to the Church Commissioners Society. The Commonwealth and Continental Church Society (CCS) took over management of the school in 1936.

In 1938, the first ‘O’ Level students sat their examinations, followed by the first ‘A’ Level students in 1952.

In 1969, the Ministry of Education expressed its intention for the school to continue operating as an interracial institution. The government officially took over the management of the school in 1974.

Today, Limuru Girls is a national public school managed by a Board of Management (BoM), in accordance with the Basic Education Act of 2013, with the Anglican Church of Kenya—Diocese of Mt. Kenya South—as its sponsor.
The school has grown into a nine-streamed institution with a student population of over 2,000 and staffed with 55 Teachers Service Commission (TSC)-employed teachers and 21 BoM-employed teachers.
Over the years, it has produced women who have excelled in academics and made significant contributions in both national and international spheres.
Limuru Girls has consistently performed well in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
Performance
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 456 candidates, with 92% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

10 students scored a straight A, while 47 scored an A-. Additionally, 93 students attained a B+, 104 scored a B, while 101 managed a B-.
65 students scored a C+, 27 scored a C, and the lowest grade recorded was a D+, obtained by just two students.
The school’s impressive performance saw the 2024 candidates achieve a mean score of 8.7083—a slight decline from the 8.900 mean score recorded in the 2023 KCSE.
School Fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Limuru Girls was placed in Cluster Three (III), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
