Starehe Girls Centre ranks among Kenya’s top national public girls secondary schools. The institution was established to complement the work of the renowned Starehe Boys Centre.
The journey to founding the school began in the 1990s, driven by the vision and efforts of the late Dr. Geoffrey William Griffin, Co-Founder and Director of the Starehe Boys.
The Starehe Girls Centre Trust was officially registered in 2003, with notable trustees including Dr. Manu Chandaria (the first Chairperson of the Board of Trustees), Dr. Geoffrey Griffin, Dr. Eddah Gachukia, Ms. Raychelle Omamo, Prof. Wanjiku Kabira, Mrs. Eunice Mathu, Mrs. Margery Kabuya, and Mrs. Lucy Gitonga.
Over the years, Dr. Griffin raised a total of Ksh20 million from donors in support of girls’ education. He donated the funds to Starehe Girls’ Centre, which enabled the construction of the school’s first modern dormitory—an iconic building named in his honor.
Starehe Girls Centre history
This addition built on the institution’s humble beginnings, which included three small dormitories, four classrooms, a few staff houses, a farmhouse, and offices inherited from the former Limuru Girls’ Centre.
The land on which Starehe Girls sits on was previously owned by a farming couple, Duncan Gray and Jane Auld Gray, who bequeathed it to Limuru Girls’ Centre to advance girls’ education.
That centre ceased operations in 2002 after two decades of training young women in garment making, beekeeping, farming, and life skills.
In 2004, Starehe Girls Centre was officially registered as a charitable institution supporting bright and economically disadvantaged girls from across Kenya, guided by the values of its brother school and the enduring principles of “The Starehe Way”.

Starehe Girls was placed in Cluster Three (III), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
