The Pangani Girls High School ranks among the top national public girls’ secondary schools in Kenya. Its origins trace back to pre-independence Kenya, having been established in 1932.
Originally named the Duchess of Gloucester School, the institution was named in honor of the late Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

At the time, the school primarily served the Asian community, which continues to reside in areas such as Ngara, Pangani, and Parklands in Nairobi.
The school initially offered the Cambridge and Higher Cambridge School Certificate- qualifications that were the equivalent of today’s ‘O’ and ‘A’ level education.

Following Kenya’s independence in 1963, the school was renamed Pangani Girls High School and began gradually enrolling African students.
Originally a day school for girls, Pangani was converted into a boarding school in 1986 and was then classified as a provincial school.

Post-independence, the Kenyan government adopted a regional education model, evolving from the racial structure used during colonial rule.
Pangani Girls High School history
After independence, schools that were previously segregated by race—Whites-only, Indians-only, and Africans-only—were reclassified into national, provincial, and district-level institutions, respectively.
Pangani Girls High School was elevated to national school status in 2011, expanding its mandate to provide quality secondary education to girls from across the country.
Since then, the school has steadily grown into one of Kenya’s top-performing national schools, notably under the leadership of Ruth Cheruiyot, who has since retired.
Today, the institution admits students from all regions of Kenya and continues to be a preferred choice for many top performers in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam.
Over the years, Pangani Girls High School has consistently maintained a position among the top 20 schools nationally in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations and has even produced top-ranking students at the national level.

School Fees
The government previously issued a directive standardizing the annual school fees parents are required to pay across all public secondary institutions.
As part of new guidelines introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2020, Kenya’s 103 national schools were categorized into four clusters.
Pangani Girls High School was classified under Cluster One, with the annual tuition fee capped at approximately Ksh75,798—the same fee ceiling applied to Cluster One national schools.
However, actual fees may vary slightly between institutions due to additional costs introduced at the school level, such as uniforms, motivation fees, and extracurricular activity charges.
