The Alliance Girls High School (AGHS) was founded in 1948 by the Alliance of Protestant Missions in Kenya, which started the institution to serve African girls in Kenya.
The founding of AGHS, which is one of the oldest high schools in Kenya, marked the beginning of a new phase in the education of African girls and women in Kenya.

Nationally, the school remains renowned for its continued academic excellence and for producing well-rounded students.
The first principal in the institution, Jean Wilkison, was a missionary from Scotland.

In addition, the school’s first 10 girls to be admitted in 1948 came from all the provinces in Kenya.
This made it one of the top five high schools in the country to offer a Higher School Certificate, which was the equivalent of A levels at that time.

Joan Waithaka, one of the first students to graduate successfully from the school, became the first African principal in 1969.
AGHS remains one of the best girls’ schools in the country to date. It enrolls girls from all regions of Kenya, drawing from diverse backgrounds.
The school provides an opportunity for girls from different backgrounds to live together in harmony and unity.
Also, the institution is the perennial first choice of many top performers in the national high school entrance examination, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
The institution maintains a top 10 ranking in every KCSE examination.
Almost all the students in this institution qualify to join reputable Kenyan universities, such as the University of Nairobi (UoN) and also international universities such as Oxford University and Harvard University.
Alliance Girls performance
In the 2024 KCSE, the national institution had 493 candidates, out of which 89 managed to score a straight A grade.
On the other hand, 147 of them scored an A-, 107 attained a B+ grade, while 60 attained a B.
49 students scored a mean grade of B- while only 23 had a C+. The lowest grade was a D, which was obtained by only one student.

This excellent Alliance Girls High School performance of a 10.038 mean score in the national examinations last year can be attributed to the combined efforts of teachers, school alumni, parents, and students.
School Fees
The government has previously issued a directive to all institutions regarding the total fees parents should pay per year.
Under new rules introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
AGHS was placed in Cluster Three, meaning the total annual fees per student at the institution are approximately Ksh75,798, which serves as the fee cap for Cluster Three national secondary schools.
However, the total fees may vary from school to school due to additional expenses introduced by respective institutions, such as uniforms, motivation fees, and extra activities.
Some schools charge parents/guardians in the high of Ksh100,000 annually.
