Jaswant Singh Rai is a Kenyan industrialist and chairperson of the Rai Group of Companies, a family-owned business conglomerate with interests across several sectors.

Born in India, Rai moved to Kenya in the 1970s, where he built his business career. He is one of five sons of the late Tarlochan Singh Rai and Sarjij Kaur Rai, who established the family’s business empire.

Tarlochan Singh Rai established Rai Group Limited in 1970, and it is headquartered in Eldoret, Kenya.

The privately held conglomerate has interests spanning sugar, timber, paper, cement, edible oils, horticulture and real estate, with operations and investments extending to Uganda, Tanzania and Malawi.

West Kenya Sugar Ltd (Kabras Sugar

West Kenya Sugar is a Kakamega-based sugar manufacturer associated with the Rai Group and the Kabras Sugar brand.

The mill processes more than 5,000 tonnes of cane per day and employs more than 1,000 people.

In addition, the company has also invested more than KSh1 billion in cane development, with the investment supporting farmers across several counties.

Sukari Industries Ltd

Sukari Industries is a Rai-linked sugar company and is part of the group’s sugar interests alongside West Kenya Sugar, Olepito Industries and Naitiri Sugar.

The four Rai-linked sugar businesses have previously been reported as accounting for close to half of Kenya’s sugar sales.

Olepito Industries is a Rai-linked sugar miller based in Busia County.

The company produces and markets sugar and forms part of the Rai family’s sugar portfolio.

Naitiri Sugar

Naitiri Sugar is a Rai-linked sugar business based in Bungoma County, involved in sugar production and marketing.

Timber and Wood Products

Timsales Ltd

Timsales was established in 1932 as the East African Timber Cooperative Society and has grown into a major timber and wood-products operation in Elburgon, Nakuru County.

The company produces wooden poles, plywood, fibreboards, block boards, flush doors, timber, ceiling boards and wooden tiles.

It is also described as a major supplier of poles to power utilities. The company has branches in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru.

RaiPly Kenya Ltd

Tarlochan Singh Rai and his sons, including Jaswant Rai, incorporated RaiPly in 1971.

The family-run company manufactures timber and wood-based products such as chipboards, ceiling boards, block boards, parquet, and wooden tiles.

It has also supplied poles and other products to Kenya Power.

Edible Oils and Consumer Products

Menengai Oil Refineries Ltd

The Rai Group took control of Menengai Oil Refineries in 2011.

The company manufactures edible oils and fats, including Top Fry, as well as soaps, detergents, baking powder, and skincare products for the East African market.

Paper Manufacturing

Rai Paper Mills/Rai Paper Company – acquired 2015

The Rai Group acquired the former Webuye Pan Paper Mills, which had been placed under receivership, and subsequently operated it as Rai Paper.

This business involves paper manufacturing and formed part of the group’s expansion into large-scale industrial production.

The acquisition of Pan Paper was reported at more than US$6 million, while the revived plant was later valued at about US$119.92 million.

Cement, Real Estate and Horticulture

Rai Cement – 2017: Rai Cement was established in 2017 along the Kisumu–Kericho Road as part of the Rai Group’s expansion into cement manufacturing. The company produces and sells cement for the Kenyan construction market.

Tulip Properties Ltd: Tulip Properties is a real-estate investment company linked to the Rai Group, with Jaswant Singh Rai reported as a director. Its activities include acquiring, leasing, and selling property.

Menengai Orchards: Menengai Orchards is a horticultural venture linked to the Rai Group. It is described in the cited reports as a 380-acre cultivation operation, with plans to access export markets, including China.
