Global Trade Center (GTC) Office Tower is a skyscraper in Westlands, Nairobi, and one of the tallest buildings in the city.
The landmark tower has become a defining feature of Nairobi’s skyline, representing the growth of modern commercial real estate and the increasing demand for premium office spaces in the city.
The Kenya Times was given an exclusive tour of the facility by GTC, providing a firsthand look at the office spaces, security systems, retail outlets, dining areas and lifestyle services housed within the development.
GTC represents a major shift in Kenya’s commercial property sector, combining premium office space with hospitality, residential and retail facilities.
The History and Ownership Behind Nairobi’s Global Trade Center
Global Trade Center is a mixed-use development located along Waiyaki Way in Westlands, Nairobi. GTC Tower was developed by Avic International Real Estate in Kenya, a subsidiary of AVIC International Holding Corporation (AVIC INTL), a global shareholding enterprise affiliated with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).
The Chinese firm built what it calls a one-of-a-kind project in East Africa at the intersection of Waiyaki Way and Chiromo Lane in Westlands, bordering Villa Rosa Kempinski and Mirage Towers.

The development was envisioned as an international business hub that would attract multinational companies, financial institutions, investors, and regional organizations.
Construction began in 2015, during a period when Nairobi was experiencing rapid growth in demand for high-quality commercial and residential spaces. The project was designed as a large-scale integrated development rather than just an office building, bringing together workplaces, homes, hospitality and lifestyle facilities within one location.
The development under AVIC, GTC Office Tower, and residential towers under Pan Pacific, with the hotel component hosting the JW Marriott Hotel Nairobi, is part of one ecosystem in a symbiotic relationship, as they share some components. For instance, during holidays, when parking in either building is full, an underground tunnel will be opened to link the parking basements.
Its neighborhood hosts multinational companies, embassies, shopping centers, and financial institutions, with access to major roads for travel to the city.
The tower’s development also coincided with major infrastructure improvements, including the construction of the Nairobi Expressway, which improved connectivity between Westlands, Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Inside the Design, Height and Construction of the GTC Office Tower
GTC stands 184 meters tall, among Kenya’s tallest buildings. The skyscraper has 43 floors, of which 41 are occupiable, designed to provide Grade A office space that meets international corporate standards.
GTC features a modern curtain-wall glass exterior, giving it a distinctive appearance on Nairobi’s skyline while allowing natural light into office spaces.
The building incorporates modern features expected in premium commercial towers, including high-speed elevators, advanced security systems, backup power, air-conditioning systems and professional building management services.
The construction engineering behind GTC involved addressing challenges including wind pressure, structural stability, fire safety, and the movement of thousands of people daily. The commercial tower has strong, well-designed foundations and structural systems capable of supporting the weight of the building while maintaining safety standards.
In case of an emergency, the building has set some protocols that are followed. This includes fire escape routes in addition to the usual stairs and elevators.
Among the facilities incorporated into the building are 12 high-speed elevators to access different floors, backup power systems, air-conditioning, professional building management services and advanced security.
Security has been a major focus at GTC, with the building fitted with a seven-figure security system designed to provide enhanced protection for occupants and visitors.
The security infrastructure includes advanced surveillance and access-control systems, as well as specialized safety measures such as bomb detection equipment and bomb diffusion capabilities.
There is also a police base on the ground floor for maximum security operations.

How Much It Costs to Occupy Space at GTC Office Tower
The tower targets large corporations looking for modern Grade A offices with access to business amenities and high-level security.
Office space at GTC is positioned within Nairobi’s premium commercial property market, targeting corporations seeking modern workplaces, strategic location and enhanced security features.
Leasing office space has changed since the building entered the market. Initially, companies were required to lease a minimum of 4,000 square feet, but this was later reduced to 2,000 square feet following changing demand patterns and interest from businesses seeking smaller premium office spaces.
The adjustment allowed companies to access the building, including growing firms that require Grade-A office facilities without occupying very large spaces.
Rental rates at GTC are quoted in US dollars, with the pricing structure designed to manage escalation associated with long-term commercial property costs.
The starting office rental rate is approximately $1.10 per square foot, with prices varying depending on factors such as floor location and office specifications.
