The Nairobi Hospital is one of Kenya’s most prominent private healthcare facilities.

The hospital operates in Nairobi and has since grown into a major referral facility serving patients in Kenya and the wider East African region.

It is a non-profit organization in Kenya, leading in medical expertise and service provision, which has earned recognition throughout East Africa and beyond as an advanced diagnostic, treatment, and referral Centre.

Ownership Structure of The Nairobi Hospital

The Nairobi Hospital is owned by the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA), a non-profit, membership-based organization established to provide quality medical care.

KHA was established the create a national referral hospital serving both local and regional patients.

KHA does not have shareholders. Instead, it consists of members, individuals, and institutions that collectively own the hospital through the association.

This means that no single person, investor, or government body has full ownership of the facility.

Members of the association play a central role in governance, including electing leaders who oversee the hospital’s strategic direction.

This structure sets Nairobi Hospital apart from typical private hospitals that are profit-driven and owned by individuals or corporations.

Board, Trustees and Governance Structure

Governance at the hospital is exercised through structured leadership organs established under KHA.

KHA comprises approximately 3,000 members who collectively “own” the hospital through the association.

These members include individuals and institutions who subscribe to its objectives and governance framework.

Under this model, members have key rights, including the right to elect the Board of Management.

The Board of Management is responsible for providing policy direction, overseeing the hospital, and ensuring it adheres to its mission and regulatory requirements.

The board’s responsibilities include setting strategy, overseeing financial management, and supervising senior leadership.

A Board of Trustees exists to safeguard the hospital’s assets and ensure long-term sustainability. The trustees act as custodians of the institution’s mission, ensuring that the hospital continues to operate in line with its founding principles as a non-profit entity.
