Charting Africa’s Skies: A Low-Cost Carrier’s Journey to Connect, Empower, and Transform

When we launched Jambojet in 2014, we had a simple, bold ambition, to democratize the skies. We wanted to give more Kenyans, and eventually more Africans, the freedom to fly affordably, safely, and conveniently.

11 years later, I’m proud to say that we are well on our way to fulfilling that mission. But even more importantly, we are just getting started.

Our journey has taught us that aviation in Africa is not just about planes, it’s about connecting people to key moments that matter to them.

It’s about connecting an entrepreneur from Kisumu to opportunities in Nairobi. It’s about helping a family in Nairobi connect with their kin in Eldoret, and a family from Nairobi to a holiday at the coast.

Why Low-Cost Airlines?

There’s a misconception that low-cost airlines are “less than.” We see it differently. Low cost is not about cutting corners, it’s about removing barriers.

It’s about giving families an alternative to 12-hour road journeys. It’s about allowing young entrepreneurs to pitch in-person to investors in another county with ease.

It’s about creating access, and access drives development.

Africa has one of the fastest-growing populations in the world, yet air connectivity remains one of our biggest bottlenecks. Despite accounting for 18% of the world’s population, Africa contributes only 2% of global air traffic, with just 15% of that being domestic or regional.

High fares, limited routes, and restrictive policies have made air travel a luxury.

That’s where carriers like Jambojet come in. Our model is built for short-haul regional travel, efficient operations, and cost-conscious customers, exactly what Africa needs.

The potential for growth is staggering. In regions like Europe and Asia, low-cost carriers (LCCs) hold more than 30% market share. In Africa, we’re still at 9%, and that includes all LCCs across the continent. This is a call to action.

How Jambojet is Staying Sustainable

Growth, however, must be matched with responsibility. We are optimizing our operations to ensure we fly more passengers with a long-term lens on sustainability and scale.

We’re also leveraging data and technology in new ways, from machine learning that has improved forecasting accuracy by 10%, to predictive maintenance that minimizes downtime and improves reliability.

Technology is not only a backend enabler for us, it’s a front-facing promise of simplicity and reliability.

In fact, 78% of our revenue comes from web and app bookings, with 56% of payments via mobile proof that digital-first strategies are not a trend, but a necessity in African aviation.

Customer experience also remains our north star. Our latest passenger survey revealed that the top five drivers in airline choice are cost, customer service, easy booking process, convenient schedule and past experience.

These factors guide our investment decisions, our innovation focus, and our service philosophy. In the 11 years of operations, we have flown over 8.6 million passengers, a testament to

The trust our customers have consistently placed in us to deliver safe, reliable and affordable travel experiences.

Our IOSA certification reflects our safety-first mindset. And our three consecutive wins at the World Travel Awards for “Africa’s Leading Low-Cost Airline” affirm our relentless focus on quality service at affordable prices.

Vision Moving Forward

In the coming years, as Africa’s middle class grows and intra-Africa trade continues to grow, airlines will play an outsized role in connecting the continent.

If we do it right, if we keep our feet on the ground and our eyes on the horizon, we won’t just move passengers. We’ll move economies. We’ll move futures.

Looking forward, our vision for Jambojet is simple: to be the most trusted low-cost airline in Africa. We aspire to be known not just for where we fly, but for why we fly to connect people, dreams and opportunities.

This means expanding our network into underserved markets across the continent, deepening our investment in the communities we serve, and transforming the customer journey through seamless, digitally enabled experiences.

Because at Jambojet, every flight is more than a journey.
