The South Africa National Consumer Commission (NCC) has recalled select brand of neutralizing shampoo exported to Kenya and other Countries.
In a statement on June 9, the authority noted the shampoo contained in Dark and Lovely Moisture Plus Kits (Regular, and Super) and Dark and Lovely Anti Breakage Kitc contains some bacteria.
Consequently, NCC has directed all consumers to discontinue use of the product and return it to the point of sale for a full refund.
“The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is urging consumers in possession of 50ml single use neutralizing shampoo contained in Dark and Lovely Moisture Plus Kits (Regular, and Super) and Dark and Lovely Anti Breakage Kit to discontinue use of the product and return it to the point of sale for a full refund,” read part of the statement.

NCC’s Deputy Commissioner, Thezi Mabuza said the manufacturer, Loreal informed the Commission that it detected the presence of bacteria in the 50ml single use neutralizing shampoo during regular quality controls.
“While this is single-use shampoo, we urge South Africans who might still have these products in their possession to stop use and return to the point of purchase for a full refund,” he said.

South Africa Recalls Bacteria Infected Shampoo
According to the manufacturer, using this shampoo may lead to scalp infections for those with compromised immune systems.
The product, which was produced in April 2023, was distributed nationally, and exported to neighboring countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Morocco, and Nigeria.
Mabuza said the Consumer Protection Act requires that manufacturers and producers of products produce, and supply goods and products that are of good quality and free of defects.
“We urge suppliers and manufacturers to always prioritize consumer safety. The Commission is monitoring the recall based on its Recall Guidelines,” Mabuza said.

The recall comes after Ministry of Health Director General Ag (DG) Patrick Amoth ordered all county public health officers to seize and destroy Sherehe GSM maize meal flour in the market.
In a circular dated May 6, 2024, the ministry of health noted that a laboratory analysis of the product revealed that the maize flour, with no batch number was toxic.
The notice further explained that lab results indicated that the flour contains high levels of aflatoxin above the standard requirements of 10.0ppb. The level recorded through a laboratory analysis was 714ppb.
