The media sector in the country has been challenged to help secure the country from toxic politics ahead of the August 9 general elections
President of the Court of Appeal Justice Daniel Musinga said the media will be a critical player in the electioneering process and keeping the country intact afterwards.
Speaking Friday night during the 10th Annual Journalism Excellence Awards in Nairobi, Musinga challenged the media to break down every detail of promises and claims being made by politicians seeking various positions.
“These awards come at a time when we are approaching the General Election. I urge journalists to exercise ethical journalism and put the country first when reporting on election events”, said Justice Musinga.
Justice Musinga noted that the media plays a big role in education and agenda setting and therefore it should ensure that Kenyans get correct and fact-checked information during the electioneering period.
Speaking at the same event Auditor General Nancy Gathungu added that it was the duty of the media to ensure that citizens do not lose focus on what is important.
During the gala dinner organized by the Media council of Kenya, some 68 journalists were awarded for their excellence in various categories.
