The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has rejected all party lists submitted by 79 political parties.
IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati says the lists failed to meet the constitutional threshold on the gender equity requirement.
The lists contained names of people proposed for nomination to the National assembly, Senate, and county assemblies.
Parties have since been given seven days to comply to the requirements.
“Guided by the provisions of section 34(6A) of the Elections Act and Regulations 55 of the Elections (General) 2012, the commission reviewed the submitted lists to ensure compliance”.
“None of the 79 submitted lists were compliant and stand rejected for various reasons.” Said Chebukati
For the National Assembly, IEBC says that not more than 193 names submitted can be of the same gender.
Consequently, for the Senate list out of the 47 names, not more than 31 can be of the same gender.
Article 90 of the Constitution provides that the electoral commission shall be responsible for the conduct and supervision of the elections for the allocation of special seats on the basis of proportional of candidates by political parties by use of party lists.
ODM and UDA are among the affected parties.
