Crispin Achola is a prominent Kenyan corporate leader currently serving as the Managing Director of British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya and the Cluster Head for BAT East and Southern Africa.

 Appointed on January 1, 2021, he has made history as the first Kenyan to lead the company, overseeing operations in more than 20 countries.

He joined BAT Kenya in 1999 and worked there until 2017, holding senior roles including Managing Director for Mozambique, Cluster General Manager for Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, and Managing Director for Sudan.

From 2017 to 2021, he was posted and worked at Kimberly-Clark Corporation as General Manager for West, East, and Central Africa (WECA), as well as the Managing Director for Nigeria.

Crispin returned to BAT in January 2021 as Managing Director for Kenya, succeeding Beverley Spencer Obatoyinbo and making history as the first Kenyan to hold that position.

In 2025, he steered BAT-K to record-breaking performance, with dividends doubling: the firm increased the interim dividend by 100% to KSh 10 per share, up from KSh 5 in 2024.

Under his leadership, the profit before tax skyrocketed by 42% to KSh 4.3 billion, even as gross revenue softened due to market headwinds.

Achola also led the giant tobacco company in cost optimization, achieving a 6% reduction in operating costs through aggressive productivity initiatives and a 114% turnaround in interest income through strategic currency management.

Early Life and Educational Background

An international upbringing marked Crispin Achola’s early life due to his father’s academic career as a sociology professor, which saw him spend 11 years of his childhood in the United States while his father studied there.

He is the second of four brothers, and his mother was a school administrator at Kianda School before her passing.

His family later moved to Zambia, where his father worked at the University of Zambia, and he returned to Kenya as a teenager to complete his high school education, attending Strathmore School in Lavington, Nairobi.

He earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Business Administration from the University of Nairobi between 1990 and 1993.

In 2022, the people-first leader completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Strathmore Business School.

In his LinkedIn profile, Achola describes himself as a strategic leader specializing in managing diverse markets and spearheading initiatives that align with long-term strategies while ensuring operational excellence.

Crispin’s Career Background

In his career path, Achola is a seasoned executive with over 15 years of senior management experience.

  • British American Tobacco, 2021-Present

He serves as the Managing Director for Kenya and Cluster Director for East and Southern Africa, being responsible for strategy, P&L, people development, and delivering maverick outcomes across East Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands, and Southern Africa, as well as overseeing revenue turn of over USD 400mn, four factories, four listed companies as well as over 700 employees.

  • Kimberly-Clark,2017–2020

He served as the General Manager for West, East, and Central Africa for 2 years and 11 months, and as Managing Director for Nigeria, with responsibilities for P&L delivery and the development of long-term strategy.

  • British American Tobacco,2005-2017

In his earlier career at BAT, he held various leadership roles over the 12 years and 2 months of service.

  1. General Manager-Sudan

He served in this position for 1 year and 10 months, from January 2016 to October 2017, during which he was responsible for P&L delivery and the development of long-term strategy.

  1. General manager- Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi Cluster

For 1 year and 6 months, Achola oversaw the general management role with full P&L responsibility, including strategy formulation, from July 2015 to December 2016.

  1. Managing Director for BAT Mozambique

Started this role in January 2013, steering general management roles with full P&L responsibility through June 2015, spanning 2 years and 6 months.

  1. Head of Trade Marketing and Distribution

He worked in this position for 3 years, from January 2010 to December 2012, in Kenya.

  1. Marketing Director in the Democratic Republic of Congo

In DRC, Achola was responsible for developing and delivering a marketing strategy for a period of one year, from January 2009 to December 2009.

  1. Enterprise Programme Office Manager

In Kenya, he held the position for 2 years, from January 2007 to December 2008.

  1. Head of Marketing East Africa

From September 2005 to December 2007, Achola served as a leader in Kenya for 2 years and 4 months.

Family Background

Crispin is married to his wife, Mercy, of Kamba origin, and together they are blessed with one child, a son named Sean.

Achola has expressed contentment with his family unit and stated in an interview that his family provides an unwavering support system, allowing him to balance his demanding work life with his personal studies and responsibilities.

Achievements

He led BAT Kenya to exceed its early global target, including a 54% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing the 2030 goal, driven by Sh145 million in solar investments, a 62.5% reduction in water usage, and 47% of women in senior leadership roles.

He championed the introduction of smokeless products, such as oral nicotine pouches, in Kenya, aligning with BAT’s “A Better Tomorrow” strategy.

Achola secured repeated Top Employer certifications for Kenya, Uganda, and Africa.

He has been loud in addressing illicit trade issues and has successfully defended the company against 2025 tax evasion allegations.

Achola has maintained strong shareholder returns amid challenges, with high dividend payouts.

The maverick featured in lists such as the ‘Top 25 Most Influential CEOs’ and the ‘Top 60 Most Transformative CEOs’ in Kenya.
