Clara Momanyi Samiji is a celebrated Kiswahili scholar, author, translator, and academic leader currently serving as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenyatta University Council.
Early Life and Education
Clara Samiji Momanyi was born in 1954 in the Taveta region of Kenya.
She holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Kiswahili and History from the University of Nairobi.
She went on to pursue postgraduate studies at Kenyatta University, attaining both a Master of Arts in Kiswahili Studies and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Kiswahili Literary Studies.
Her doctoral thesis, published in 2013, examined the classification of Kiswahili poetry through the lens of proverbs.
Career
Following the completion of her postgraduate training, Clara Momanyi joined Kenyatta University as a lecturer in the Department of Kiswahili and Other African Languages within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Over the years, she rose through the academic ranks to become a Senior Lecturer and later a Professor.
Her teaching covered undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Kiswahili language and literature.
She also supervised master’s and doctoral students and examined postgraduate research.
Professor Momanyi served as Chair of the Department of Kiswahili, where she was responsible for academic coordination, programme delivery, and quality assurance.
She also participated in the development and review of Kiswahili curricula at the university level.
Her leadership roles include:
- 1994 – Awarded a Gender Research Grant by OSSREA for a study on schooling disparities among Muslim boys and girls on Kenya’s coast.
- 2002 – Participated in the Gender Institute Session in Dakar, Senegal.
- 2006 – Selected as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, where she researched Kiswahili teaching methodologies.
- 2013 – Published her Ph.D. thesis on Kiswahili poetry classification using proverbs.
- 2015 – Won the Text Book Centre Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature for her children’s book Ushindi wa Nakate.
Outside the classroom, Momanyi has held several leadership positions, including serving as the Secretary General of the Kenya National Kiswahili Association and the Treasurer of the Regional East African Kiswahili Association.
She has also participated in curriculum development, language policy formulation, and served as a senior Kiswahili language examiner.

University Governance and Leadership
In December 2025, Professor Momanyi’s career reached a new leadership milestone when she was appointed Non-Executive Chairperson of the Council of Kenyatta University for a three-year term commencing 19 December 2025.
This appointment, made by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba under the Universities Act, positions her as the strategic head of one of Kenya’s most prominent public universities.
