Michael Carrick has been given more time as Manchester United head coach following a meeting of the club’s senior leadership on Monday, despite growing pressure after the team’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
Carrick’s position came under serious threat after Sunday’s loss, which left United 16th in the Premier League standings and extended their winless run to eight matches in all competitions.
Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox discussed the team’s situation as the club considered its response to the disappointing results.
The latest setback contrasts sharply with Carrick’s first months in charge, when he helped United climb the Premier League table, secure Champions League qualification and earn a permanent contract.
How Michael Carrick Turned United’s Season Around
Carrick returned to Old Trafford on January 13, 2026, after the club parted ways with Ruben Amorim. He was appointed interim head coach until the end of the 2025–26 season.
The former United midfielder arrived at a difficult time, with the club sixth in the Premier League and already out of both domestic cup competitions.
His first two matches produced statement victories over Manchester City and Arsenal, earning him the Premier League Manager of the Month award for January.
United beat City 2-0 before defeating Arsenal 3-2 away from home. The results gave Carrick an immediate boost and raised expectations that he could restore the team’s consistency.
He went on to record 11 wins in 16 matches, helping United finish third in the Premier League and qualify for the Champions League.
The club confirmed on May 22 that Carrick would continue as head coach on a contract running until 2028.
His early results had strengthened the case for his appointment, but the current campaign has presented a different challenge.

Manchester United’s Results in the 2026–27 Premier League
United’s first eight league matches have exposed consistency issues. The team has managed one win, four draws and three defeats, collecting seven points.
The campaign began with a 2-0 defeat away to Hull City on August 22. United then responded with a 5-2 home victory over Ipswich Town on August 30, with captain Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick.
However, the team failed to build on that result.
United drew 2-2 away to Everton on September 6 before losing 1-0 to Manchester City at Old Trafford on September 13.
A 1-1 draw against Fulham followed on September 20. United again shared the points when they hosted Tottenham Hotspur on October 10, with the match ending 1-1.
The team then drew 1-1 away to Leeds United on October 18, extending its run without a league victory to six matches.
Bournemouth brought that sequence into sharper focus with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford on October 25.
The visitors took the lead through Rayan in the 38th minute before Marcus Tavernier scored five minutes later. Evanilson added the third in the 71st minute to complete a convincing victory.
The result left United with seven points from eight league matches, their poorest return at this stage of a season since 1986–87, according to Opta statistics.

Defeats in Europe and the EFL Cup Add to Pressure
United’s problems have not been limited to the Premier League.
On October 21, they lost 4-1 away to Como in the Champions League, increasing the scrutiny on Carrick ahead of the Bournemouth match.
The team also exited the EFL Cup after losing to Brighton and Hove Albion in the third round.
Those setbacks have left Carrick facing questions about his tactical decisions, team selection and ability to get consistent performances from his players.
His decision to leave Fernandes out of the starting line-up against Bournemouth also attracted attention. The move came after the midfielder had publicly criticised the team’s tactics following the defeat to Como.
United’s poor run has also coincided with questions about the relationship between the coach and some of the players, adding another issue for the club’s leadership to consider.
Meanwhile, United are scheduled to face Chelsea away on October 31 in their next Premier League fixture.
The match gives Carrick a chance to respond to the Bournemouth defeat, although the team’s recent results leave little room for another setback.
