The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched day and night road safety checks targeting speeding, drunk driving, improper overtaking and other traffic offences along major transport corridors.
The checks are part of the Msimu Bila Ajali, Usalama Barabarani campaign, which aims to reduce road crashes and prevent deaths through stronger enforcement and greater road safety awareness.
In a statement dated October 26, NTSA said the operation, conducted in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, would sensitise drivers and passengers and conduct safety checks during the day and at night.
“The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced a nationwide road safety enforcement campaign that will involve both day and night checks targeting motorists, public service vehicles (PSVs), and long-distance transport operators,” said NTSA.
The authority said it prioritised night checks because evening and late-night hours are among the deadliest periods on the roads.
“By allocating additional resources during these high-risk hours, we can maximise efforts to disrupt the critical risk factors that cause preventable road traffic crashes,” NTSA stated.

Offences and Requirements NTSA Will Check
NTSA said officers would monitor vehicle speeds to detect speeding violations and inspect speed limiters to ensure they functioned properly and continuously transmitted data to the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS).
The authority advised vehicle owners to log in to the upgraded IRSMS portal at https://irsmowners.ntsa.go.ke to link their vehicles to licensed speed limiter vendors.
NTSA also said officers would inspect documents from long-distance public transport operators, including passenger manifests, driver logs used to monitor driving hours, Road Service Licences, valid inspection stickers, and compliance with licensed routes.
The checks will also cover vehicle capacity to ensure motorists do not carry more passengers or goods than authorised. Officers will verify the validity of driving licences and Public Service Vehicle (PSV) badges.
The authority urged passengers to wear seatbelts throughout their journeys, warning that failure to do so increases the risk of serious injuries and deaths in the event of a crash
NTSA noted that seatbelts help keep occupants secure and prevent them from being thrown out of vehicles during collisions.
Drivers will also face breathalyser screening as officers seek to identify motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.
NTSA cautioned motorists that it issues official speed violation notifications only through SMS messages bearing the sender ID NTSA. It urged drivers to report suspicious messages from numbers claiming to represent the authority.

NTSA Warns Tour Drivers Over Improper Overtaking
NTSA has raised concern over improper overtaking, which it said has contributed to major fatal crashes on Kenyan roads.
During inter-agency safety compliance checks along the Voi-Taveta road, NTSA urged tour vehicle drivers to keep left and maintain lane discipline to reduce the risk of head-on collisions.
The warning comes as the authority steps up enforcement and public awareness efforts to address dangerous driving behaviour on major transport corridors.
NTSA said day-and-night inspections would follow operational protocols designed to protect motorists, manage traffic flow, and ensure the safety of enforcement officers.
Motorists have been urged to slow down when approaching designated checkpoints and cooperate with law enforcement officers.
The authority also advised drivers planning night journeys to exercise extra caution because darkness reduces visibility. It urged motorists to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and stay focused on the road throughout their journeys.
