Silvanus Sewe failed in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) attaining a D+ grade. However, he embarked on a self-improvement journey and relentlessly pursued academic excellence, leading him to earn a Doctorate.
He is a man of books who has received recognition for his career achievements despite having a low high school grade.
Silvanus Sewe Academic Comeback
He began his educational journey in Sagana, where he completed his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), scoring 59 out of 72 points. He later joined Mwea Boys High School in 1987.
While in Mwea Boys High School, he faced many challenges that he attributes to his low grades in High School.
For instance, in form two, he missed his third term classes, due to a fallout he had with the school principal.
After completing his KCSE in 1990, he attained a D+, a grade that is often associated with failure, and lost hope to many candidates in Kenya.
Sewe decided to embark on an academic comeback. For over 15 years, he has pursued more than 20 different certificates from various colleges in Nairobi.
Educational Journey of Silvanus
He holds a Certificate in Inclusive Leadership, The Power of Workplace Diversity from the University of Colorado.
He also has an international certificate in Enterprise Risk Management from the Institute of Risk Management.
His passion for establishing academic excellence did not stop there, he went ahead to do a Diploma in Private Investigations from the UK.
A course that opened an opportunity for him to play a key role in shaping the security curriculum in various Universities including Egerton.
Additionally, he has a bachelor’s degree in business information and technology from the University of Greenwich.
He enrolled for his master’s degree in business administration (Corporate Management) from the University Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA)
The hallmark of his academic journey, recently, he acquired his PhD (Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership and Governance) from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

The hope for D+ candidates
Dr Sewe’s inspiring story has become a hope for the candidates who scored low grades in KCSE.
Sewe has made milestones in his career, despite his low grades in High School. He is currently the Founder and Director of Sewe International Limited which deals with Governance and Leadership.
Additionally, he is a lead consultant in Governance and risk management. He has served as a chair of KEPSA as a security sector Board and Member of the Governing Council.
He has made key contributions to constitutional reforms, particularly in reviewing and aligning security laws with the 2010 Constitution.

Light at the end of the Tunnel for D grade student
In the recent Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results in Kenya, over 430,000 students got Ds in their exams, while over 48,000 students got Es in their final exams
With the recent announcement from The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), candidates who got Ds in their final exam results have an opportunity to explore their dream careers.
KUCCPS stated that there will be open opportunities from TVETs and KMTC and encouraged students who got a D grade to apply.
For Artisan (Level 4) programs, students must have a KCSE mean grade of E while for Craft (Level 5) programs, applicants will require a KCSE mean grade of D and above.
Further, admission to Diploma (Level 6) programs is open to students with a KCSE mean grade of C– and above.
All degree programs require a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ and above.
