Dan Gikonyo is a Kenyan Cardiologist and the founder of the Karen Hospital. He is an interventional and non-invasive adult cardiologist with a thriving practice of over 43 years.

Age and Early Life

Gikonyo was born in 1950 in a small village called Igithe in Central Kenya.

In 1968, Dan Gikonyo attended Kagumo High School where he completed his ‘A’ level. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi from 1970-1975.

From 1977 to 1980, Dr Gikonyo was enrolled at the University of Nairobi where he graduated with a master’s degree in Internal Medicine from the University of Nairobi.

In addition to his masters, the cardiologist holds a post-doctoral fellowship in Audit Cardiology from the University of Minnesota USA.

Moreover, while studying in the USA, he became a member of the American College of Cardiology.

Career Background

Dr. Gikonyo has extensive experience in cardiology with a thriving practice of over 43 years.

He started his career as an editor for the Nairobi Journal of Medicine from 1974-1975.

In 1975, he worked as a Medical Officer at a Provincial Hospital in Nakuru.

He joined the Kenyatta National Hospital in 1977 as a Senior House Officer and later rose through the ranks as a Specialist II.

Gikonyo worked as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi under the Medical School, Cardiologist section from 1981 to 1982.

Additionally, he worked as a Research Scholar at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation in 1983.

He has authored a book, “Doctor at Heart” that details his personal and professional journey.

Family

Dr. Dan is married to Betty Gikonyo. Together with his wife, they co-founded The Karen Hospital. His wife serves as the Chief Executive Officer and chairs the hospital’s Board of Directors.
