Noordin Haji was sworn in as the new Director-General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on Wednesday, June 14 at State House Nairobi.
Haji took the oath of office at a ceremony presided over by President William Ruto and other government officials.
“I have full confidence that with the experience you have gathered over the years, having worked in the intelligence service for many years and in other senior government positions such as the DPP, you have assembled knowledge and experience to be able to discharge your responsibility,” Ruto said.
President William Ruto nominated Noordin Haji previously served as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) since July 2021.

The National Assembly’s Defence and Foreign Relations Committee approved Noordin Haji’s nomination to serve as NIS Director General.
Haji has previously served in the National Intelligence Service as the Deputy Director of the Counter Organized Crime Unit.
Nonetheless, the former DPP replaced Philip Kameru who held the position for over eight years.
Age and Early Life of Noordin Haji
Noordin Haji was born on the 3rd of July 1973. His career can be attributed to the fact that he is a son of a politician.
He is the son of former Garissa Senator the late Mohamed Yusuf Haji who also served as District Commissioner in Garissa, Minister of Defence from 2008 to 2013, Minister of Internal Security & Provincial Affairs. His mother was a teacher.
Education Background
He attended Kabarak High School for his secondary education before joining Greensteds International School in Nakuru.
Haji later decided to pursue higher education abroad, earning an LLM and LLB from the University of Wales and Cardiff furthermore, he holds a post graduate diploma from Kenya School of Law.
Additionally, he has a master’s degree in National Security Policy with merit from the Australian National University.
Professional Background
Noordin Haji started off in the public service as a state counsel at the attorney General office in 2000. This kickstarted his career and helped him shape his professional life.
Later he was the Deputy Director – counter organized crime unit in the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
His duties in the National Intelligence Service, were to provide legal counsel to the Director General NIS, Inspector General of Police, The Director of Criminal Investigations.
He was nominated as the Director of public prosecution, and he assumed office in 2018 vetting by the Public Service Commission and Parliament.

In addition, Noordin Haji was also the Head of Somalia Stabilization, the Principal Intelligence Officer- External Division, (NIS) from 2010 to 2013.
He was the Head Countering Violent Extremism Assistant Intelligence Officer Director General’s Coordination Office from 2009 to 2010.
Moreover, he headed the Legal Department, National Security Intelligence Service (NSIS) between Dec 2000 to 2005 and Principal Legal Advisor to the Director General between 2005 and 2009.
Noordin Haji has also served as the state counsel at the Attorney General’s office attached to the treaties and Agreements Departments from January 2000 to December 2000.
Professional Achievements
In 2021 he was named the ICJ Kenya jurist of the year for his commitment to champion justice.
In 2020 he was awarded the Public Sector Lawyer of the year at the Nairobi Legal awards.
He received the 2019-star person of the year Award by the Star, the same year he received Distinguished Taxpayers Award.
On December 12, 2018, he also received the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) by then President Uhuru Kenyatta, for his distinguished efforts in the fight against graft and the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) in 2012.

Though he is a public figure, Noordin Haji has kept his family away from the public eye.
