Richard Onyonka is a Kenyan politician, currently serving as the Kisii County Senator.
He is popular for his bold remarks and opinions on current issues during Interviews.
Age and Early Life
Although his exact year of birth is unknown, Onyonka did not face many struggles in life. He is the son of the late Dr. Zachary Onyonka, who served as a minister during the administrations of former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi.
In 1992, after the General election, his father was appointed as Minister for Science and Technology by then-President Moi.
His father died following a short illness which marked the lowest point of his life.
His political success is marked by his father’s political background which has motivated him to succeed in politics.
Richard Onyonka Education Background
He attended Kisii High School for his O-level studies and later moved on to St. Mary’s School Yala for his A-levels. In 1980, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in commerce.
Additionally, he obtained a master’s degree in economics and public management from New York State and North Carolina State Universities in 1987.

Career Background and Politics
He is, currently serving as the Kisii County Senator.
In 2007, he contested for the Member of Parliament seat for Kitutu Chache and successfully won the election after previously failing in his attempt.
He was later appointed as the assistant minister of Foreign Affairs in 2008, during Mwai Kibaki regime.
From 2013 to 2022, he served as a Member of Parliament in Kitutu Chache, gaining dominance in the constituency.
He was involved in a failed coup attempt during the Moi Era. His father, who was serving under the regime at the time, could not understand why he wanted to overthrow the government led by his close friend.
He found it difficult to comprehend how his son had allied himself with the “enemies” of the government.
Family
Even though he said he is a polygamous man with many children, no further details about his family are in the public.
