13 People Dead in Accident Involving Multiple Vehicles

At least 13 people killed, 11 injured in an accident involving three vehicles at Cheptangulgei on the Kaplong-Kericho highway, Bomet County.

Bomet traffic commandant Amos Namasaka confirmed the accident stating that 11 others have been injured in a road accident.

The accident occurred on Saturday April 5 afternoon after three vehicles, a personal car, a 14-seater matatu and a truck, collided with each other, killing several passengers on the spot.

Namasaka stated that preliminary investigations revealed the private car was carrying people returning from a celebration. The loud music and their lack of caution on the road contributed to the incident

Kenya Red Cross said the accident occurred at 2:50 PM at Cheptakulge area, Daraja Sita, Bomet County, involving a lorry, a Nissan, and a private vehicle.

The emergency responder further stated that it, alongside the County Government of Bomet and other response teams, were at the scene.

It added that five individuals who were critically injured have been referred to Tenwek Hospital, while six others with minor injuries were attended to on-site.

Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok also confirmed the tragic news, stating that those injured had been rushed to nearby hospitals, including the Kaplong Mission Hospital.

He mentioned that rescue teams from Kaplong Mission Hospital, the County Governments of Bomet and Kericho, the Kenya Red Cross, and the Kenya Police had evacuated the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

ā€œDeeply saddened to learn of a grisly road accident that has occurred on the Sotik-Kericho Highway at Cheptangulgei, Sotik Sub-County,ā€ he said.

ā€œThe three-car accident has led to some fatalities and serious injuries. As we continue to monitor their progress, we wish the injured a quick recovery and send our sincere condolences to the families of those who’ve lost their loved ones.ā€

Videos and images seen by The Kenya Times showed the matatu extensively damaged, with a shattered windscreen, broken seats and windows, and deflated tyres, highlighting the severity of the accident.

Meanwhile, the white truck was seen leaning to one side across the road, with damage to its front, while the personal car was also reduced to a wreck.

Onlookers, police cars, and Kenya Red Cross responders could be seen at the scene as authorities attempted to cordon off the area.

Police arrived at the accident venue to process the scene and remove the wreckage.

At the time of publishing, the exact cause of the accident had not been established.

14 People Injured in Mombasa Accident

The accident follows a separate incident on Friday evening at Kibarani, Mombasa County, where at least 14 people were left with serious injuries.

The 14 individuals are currently receiving treatment and recovering at the Coast General and Referral Hospital.

The accident involved a Tahmeed Bus, which lost control and collided with a public vehicle.

In a statement on Saturday, Tahmeed Company confirmed that the driver sustained injuries, but no fatalities were reported in the accident.

“We wish to inform you of an accident that happened last night at approximately 3 am in the Gilgil area along the Mombasa-Nakuru highway involving one of our buses KCN 075. The driver sustained injuries, and some passengers escaped with minor injuries and are receiving medical attention,” the statement read.

“A rescue bus has been dispatched. We also wish to report another accident involving KCK 104 at Kibarani Overpass at 8 pm while headed to our yard. The bus was without passengers at the time of the incident. No fatalities have been reported and those injured are currently receiving treatment at the Coast General Provisional Hospital.”
