The Inspector-General, Douglas Kanja, applauded the Kenyan police serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) during a medal awarding ceremony on 7 February 2026.
In a statement from the Kenyan Contingent Commander, Mr. Mbatian Kantai, SSP, the officers were highly commended for their professionalism, discipline, and dedication to duty.
“You have facilitated humanitarian assistance, protected key sites, and fostered dialogue at the grassroots level. Each day, through your actions, you have embodied the core principle of UNMISS: to protect civilians and build durable peace,” read the Inspector-General’s message.
According to the statement made, the officers made a significant contribution towards the UNMISS mandate by protecting the civilians, facilitating humanitarian support, securing installations, and supporting peace efforts at the grassroots levels.
Kenya is a key supporter of the UN peacekeeping efforts in the International system and has, over the years, remained active in peace and stability maintenance in host states that require help.
In attendance during the ceremony were senior UNMISS leadership, members of the diplomatic community, and distinguished guests.
A total of 27 Kenya Police officers were awarded medals as a recognition of their service as part of the International police component in the UNMISS.

Police Commissioner Mr. Jeremiah Togba, who was the guest of honour and the officer in charge, presented the officers with the awards.
Also in attendance were the Representative of the Kenyan Ambassador, Mr. Benedict Watamba; Major General (Rtd) Aggrey Owino (Chairman, RJMEC); UNPOL senior leadership; and the Defence Attaché at the Kenyan Embassy in South Sudan, Col Martin Owino.
Among those who received the award were UNMISS UNPOL Gender Adviser, Ms Millicent Alambo, SSP, and the UNPOL Team Leader of the Anti-Cattle Raiding Specialised Police Team, Mr. Kioko Munyambu, SSP, Mr. Magongo Amadiva, SSP, Mr. Kipsang Kipkazi, SP, and Mr. Silas Kiptoo, ASP.

Role of Kenyan Police Officers in UNMISS
In addition to ensuring that there is security and stability, Kenyan police under the UNMISS are mandated to protect civilians from any physical violence, including sexual violence.
To curb potential violence, they conduct day and night patrolling to prevent human rights violations of the South Sudanese civilians.
