Another Homa Bay Resident Dies in Police Custody

Another incident involving a Kenyan dying in police custody has been reported in Homa Bay County, just days after social media influencer and teacher Albert Ojwang also died while in police custody. Calvin Omondi Onditi, a 36-year-old fisherman, was arrested on Saturday, June 14, 2025, around midnight and taken to Kipasi Police Post in Mbita constituency. He was apprehended after being found trespassing Got Pen at Ndhuru village, following a tip-off from local residents.

Hours after his arrest, Calvin was reported dead, with police stating he died by suicide, allegedly hanging himself with his trousers. However, Omondi’s family disputes the police narrative, questioning the visible bruises on his neck.

“We were called and told that your brother is dead, and we were left in shock. How could this happen? You informed us he was taken to Mbita just hours earlier, and then this is what we find. When we arrived there, we found him hanging,” said a family member of Omondi.

According to the police report, Calvin, a fisherman from Nduru beach, was allegedly caught trespassing inside Got  Pen in a nearby village, which led to his arrest.

Calvin Omondi Dies in Police Custody

A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted at Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital to determine the actual cause of death.

At the hospital, Chief Executive Officer Vincent Oduor confirmed that Calvin’s body showed signs of injury.

“We expect that an autopsy will be conducted on the body, but just from an initial overview, we have observed strangulation marks on the neck. The noose, made from long trousers, is still intact, and the tongue is also bitten. So far, there are no other significant marks on the body apart from these,” the doctor stated.

The family of the fisherman is now demanding justice and is skeptical about the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on March 7, 2025, aimed at ending extrajudicial killings.

“If this trend continues, I don’t understand the MOU that was signed between Raila and Ruto; it seems to only promote killings, particularly targeting the youth. We are still dealing with the case of Albert; it’s not yet resolved. This is another case that has arisen, and we want the government to come forward and explain what is happening,” a family member expressed.

MP Millie Odhiambo Disputes Police Narrative

Calvin Omondi’s death has sparked widespread condemnation, with Kenyans calling for accountability from the police. Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo has disputed the police’s suicide claim and is calling for a thorough investigation.

“These deaths in police custody cannot continue. The case of Albert Ojwang remains unresolved, and now they have killed Mr. Onditi from Ndhuru, in my constituency. Yet another death in Homa Bay County, with the ridiculous story of suicide yet again,” the MP stated.

The death of Omondi follows the murder of 31-year-old blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, who was arrested at his home in Homa Bay County on June 7, 2025, by six plainclothes DCI officers, following a complaint from Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat regarding a critical social media post.

Ojwang was transported over 350 km to Nairobi’s Central Police Station in a Subaru Forester without being booked locally. He was reportedly in good health upon arrival but died in custody on June 8, with an autopsy revealing assault-related injuries, contradicting police claims of suicide.ms of suicide.
