Kitonga Early Life and Education
Archbishop Arthur Kitonga was born into a poor family in Makueni County. Kitonga testified that in the year 1957, he heard the voice of God when he was barely 12 years old.
He was brought up in the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK). As a student, he was never called by his name; instead, both teachers and students referred to him as “pastor.”
Kitonga was enrolled into Kaimosi Bible school in Kenya between 1964-1965 by Missionaries when they heard of his outreach mission and vision while at Kampala in Uganda in 1963.
Career
Kitonga’s Career path began taking shape when he travelled to Nairobi to start his ministry in the capital city. He narrates of lacking the fare to travel to Nairobi, however, the friends he studied with in his home area helped him walk to the capital.
With the ministry work in mind he was also paying a visit to his uncle seeking encouragement and advice on what to do and where to start since he had already embarked on evangelism.
After meeting his uncle, he continued with his evangelism work. In early 1961, went to PEFA church where he was prayed for by one of the missionary preachers to be fully saved and join the church.
The following year, he commenced evangelism in the streets with his new church. In 1963, he received a call to go to Uganda to join his uncle and Bishop Paul Mutua who had been his deputy in the Redeemed church for several years.
After finishing his Bible school training in Kaimosi he returned to Uganda and was appointed the secretary general for PEFA in missionary assemblies.
Later, he joined hands with a friend and started Kampala College in Missionary Assemblies where he acted as a dean.
ADVERT
In 1973, Idi Amin Ordered all the missionaries both white and black to leave the country. Following the announcement, he left Uganda for Kenya with his wife and their one child Vicky Kitonga.
After coming to Kenya, he was welcomed by his younger brother who donated them a room in Mathare. He proceeded to Mathare Valley where one school gave him a small room that could hold about ten individuals and on the higher side thirty to start a church.
Starting from a low level, Kitonga has travelled extensively in Africa and other countries across Africa to ordain other Bishops into the ministry.
Family
Kitonga is married to Josephine with whom they have celebrated their golden jubilee in a glamorous ceremony on May 21.
The two got married on April 29, 1972, in a simple ceremony where only tea and bread were served at the reception. Unlike their wedding 50 years ago, which was far more modest, the couple marked their anniversary with an extravagant celebration, complete with an abundance of food.
Moreover, the ceremony was held at Graceland Farm. The event was attended by renowned pastors from Kenya, the United Kingdom, and a delegation from Durban, South Africa.
The two were joined by their children and grandchildren. At the same event, Kitonga was gifted a car by his spiritual sons and daughters.
