An autopsy conducted on the body of Tabitha Gatwiri, a content creator whose tragic demise sent shockwaves across, has ascertained what caused her death.
Gatwiri’s family on Saturday, November 2, 2024, released an update of the autopsy report after pathologists conducted a postmortem examination on the body.
The 28-year-old content creator was found dead in her house on October 31.
News of her demise was shared by her fellow content creators who struggled to come to terms with her sudden departure.
Initial reports indicated that she died after a short illness before her body was taken to the Kenyatta University (KU) morgue where the autopsy was conducted.
According to the family, the postmortem was conducted in their presence. The family in the statement revealed that Gatwiri’s cause of death was positional asphyxia with brain oedema.
In addition, Gatwiri’s family said that a full toxicology will be done to rule out possible poisoning or intoxication.
“Pathologists conducted the postmortem at Kenyatta University Funeral Home in the presence of her family. The late Gatwiri passed on from positional asphyxia with brain oedema. A full toxicology will be done to rule out possible poisoning and/or intoxication’. Burial plans are underway,” the statement reads.
Medscape describes positional asphyxia with brain oedema as a medical condition involving suffocation where a person is unable to breathe properly due to their body position, leading to inadequate oxygen levels (asphyxia).
Positional asphyxia with brain edema
This restricted breathing can cause a lack of oxygen in the blood, which in turn deprives the brain of sufficient oxygen.
When the brain is starved of oxygen, it can lead to swelling or oedema, where fluids build up within brain tissue.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, this condition is especially dangerous because it can quickly lead to brain damage and, in severe cases, death.
Gatwiri’s family while thanking Kenyans for their patience announced that the exact burial date will be communicated by the deceased content creator’s immediate family in due course.
