An autopsy conducted on the body of Tabitha Gatwiri, a content creator whose tragic demise sent shockwaves across, has ascertained what caused her death.

Gatwiri’s family on Saturday, November 2, 2024, released an update of the autopsy report after pathologists conducted a postmortem examination on the body.

The 28-year-old content creator was found dead in her house on October 31.

News of her demise was shared by her fellow content creators who struggled to come to terms with her sudden departure.

Initial reports indicated that she died after a short illness before her body was taken to the Kenyatta University (KU) morgue where the autopsy was conducted.

According to the family, the postmortem was conducted in their presence. The family in the statement revealed that Gatwiri’s cause of death was positional asphyxia with brain oedema.

In addition, Gatwiri’s family said that a full toxicology will be done to rule out possible poisoning or intoxication.

“Pathologists conducted the postmortem at Kenyatta University Funeral Home in the presence of her family. The late Gatwiri passed on from positional asphyxia with brain oedema. A full toxicology will be done to rule out possible poisoning and/or intoxication’. Burial plans are underway,” the statement reads.

Medscape describes positional asphyxia with brain oedema as a medical condition involving suffocation where a person is unable to breathe properly due to their body position, leading to inadequate oxygen levels (asphyxia).

This restricted breathing can cause a lack of oxygen in the blood, which in turn deprives the brain of sufficient oxygen.

When the brain is starved of oxygen, it can lead to swelling or oedema, where fluids build up within brain tissue.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, this condition is especially dangerous because it can quickly lead to brain damage and, in severe cases, death.

Gatwiri’s family while thanking Kenyans for their patience announced that the exact burial date will be communicated by the deceased content creator’s immediate family in due course.

Her death came as a shock to many with the 29-year-old, who was known for witty and funny content, having uploaded a short video on her Instagram page on Wednesday, October 29.

News of her demise was shared by her fellow content creators who struggled to come to terms with her sudden departure.

Comedian MC Bull recalled how he planned a shoot with Gatwiri, lauding her as a creative mind.

“Can’t believe you’re no more. It’s just last month we talked about our planned shoot. I am Sad; I don’t have words. Your talent will be missed. May God give your family strength at this trying moment.  R.I.P Tabitha Gatwiri,” he wrote.

Taking to his social media account, Kalonzo recalled how he met Gatwiri a few years ago, describing her as a vibrant and knowledgeable person.

“My heart hurts as I pen this Condolence Message to the family of Tabitha Gatwiri,” Kalonzo said.

“She was a young woman determined to change the world for the better with her ideas. Our discussions on the State of the Nation and what her generation could achieve, given the opportunity, were mind-provoking.”

Tabitha Gatwiri gained popularity for her comedy skits, which she shared on various social media platforms and YouTube.

Her first viral video involved a comedic story about her “university boyfriend” and his romantic language.

On the other hand, her signature Meru accent went on to become a trademark in her videos.

However, she clarified in a past interview that “It wasn’t actually about an actual boyfriend but just comedy.”

Gatwiri had revealed in the past that she studied education at university but chose not to pursue it as a career, saying she had lost passion for the field.

The deceased received the prestigious YouTube Silver Play Button award in 2021 having reached 100,000 subscribers on her channel. By the time of her demise, the channel had 178,000 subscribers.
