Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has revealed that his name is on the most wanted list in the East African countries of Tanzania and Uganda.

Babu Owino said that he was marked as a wanted person in Tanzania and Uganda, which prevents him from visiting the two East African countries.

Speaking in an interview about his recent experience, Babu Owino recounted being detained for three hours at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam upon arrival.

He said this was because his passport details in Tanzania’s Immigration Office indicated that he was on the country’s INTERPOL list of wanted persons.

“I recently traveled to Tanzania, and upon landing at Dar es Salaam airport, I presented my passport, to be cleared by immigration, but they informed me that my name was on the Interpol wanted list, and I was not allowed to enter,” he said.

“I was detained for three hours, yet I have never committed any crime there- not even stealing a chicken.”

The lawmaker mentioned that he is banned from entering Uganda and cannot access any parts of the President Yoweri Museveni-led country.

“Even in Uganda, I am banned and cannot step foot in the country,” he said.

The legislator questioned the basis of his travel restrictions, saying he had no business interests in Tanzania but praised the country’s tax policies, which he described as more reasonable than Kenya’s.

“What are these things we are trying to do as leaders? Do I need anything in Tanzania anyway? I don’t need anything in Tanzania that I can’t find in Kenya, but I must say that Tanzania is doing well than us because its taxes are reasonable.”

Museveni Accuses Babu Owino of Supporting his Opponents

In August last year, during the launch of Raila Odinga’s AUC candidature, Yoweri Museveni alleged that Babu Owino had been working with elements opposed to his government.

According to the Ugandan president, Babu Owino, the Embakasi West MP, has become a constant subject of his intelligence briefings.

“There are some individuals in Raila’s group who I don’t think know what they are doing,” he said.

“I am a consumer of intelligence services, so I regularly review intelligence service reports. There’s a character named Babu Owino—I often see him involved with anti-Uganda and anti-NIM groups. I had never accused him before, but now I’m accusing Babu,” he said.

On occasion, Babu Owino has made his views on Ugandan political events public, and he is on record protesting the arrest of Bobby Wine by Museveni’s security operatives.
