Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has formally declared her bid for Nairobi governor in the 2027 general election, promising to tackle corruption, improve service delivery and restore order in the capital city.

The Kenya Moja Movement Party leader announced her candidature under the banner of “Nairobi Mpya”, saying the city needs a leader who understands its diversity and economic importance while managing resources prudently.

In a statement announcing her candidature, Wanjiru said the decision followed consultations with supporters, political allies and other stakeholders.

She described her bid as a call to public service aimed at restoring efficiency and accountability in the management of Nairobi County.

Her entry into the race adds another prominent name to a contest that is already attracting political attention as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.

Wanjiru said her administration would focus on improving sanitation, ensuring reliable water supply, upgrading infrastructure, strengthening healthcare services and creating a business environment capable of generating jobs and attracting investment.

“Nairobi deserves leadership that serves the people with honesty, accountability and vision,” she said.

Focus on Service Delivery

The Kenya Moja Movement Party leader said Nairobi’s status as the country’s economic hub demands a county government that provides efficient services and manages public resources responsibly.

She identified waste management as one of the city’s most pressing concerns, saying poor garbage collection and environmental degradation have affected the quality of life of residents in many parts of the capital.

Wanjiru also listed healthcare, roads and water provision among the sectors she would prioritize if elected.

According to her campaign platform, she intends to transform Nairobi into a cleaner, more organized city while promoting economic growth through policies that support businesses and investors.

She further pledged to fight corruption within county structures, arguing that prudent use of public funds would enable the county government to improve services and deliver better value to taxpayers.

The former legislator also promised inclusive leadership, saying all communities living in Nairobi should have equal opportunities regardless of tribe, religion, or social background.

Margaret Wanjiru’s Political Comeback

Wanjiru is one of the most recognizable figures in Nairobi politics, having built a public profile spanning religion, government, and elective politics over nearly two decades.

The founder of Jesus Is Alive Ministries first entered Parliament in 2007 when she won the Starehe parliamentary seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, defeating veteran politician Maina Kamanda.

Her victory elevated her to the national stage, and she was later appointed Assistant Minister for Housing in the Grand Coalition Government, a position she held during her parliamentary term.

After leaving Parliament in 2013, she shifted her focus to county politics.

She unsuccessfully contested the Nairobi Senate seat that year and later pursued the Nairobi governorship, seeking to translate her parliamentary experience into city-wide leadership.

In 2022, Wanjiru initially sought the Nairobi governor seat under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) but stepped down in favor of Johnson Sakaja following negotiations within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
