The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is rooted in the Catholic philosophy of higher education, which emphasises a free and holistic pursuit of truth concerning nature, humanity, and God.

The university’s main campus is situated along Bogani East Road in Lang’ata, southwest Nairobi. CUEA was established on 3 September 1984 as a graduate school of theology known then as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA).

The Institute (CHIEA) was founded in 1984 by the regional ecclesiastical authority known as the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA).

On 2 May 1984, the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA) was authorised by the Congregation for Catholic Education in Vatican City (cf. Prot. N. 821/80/34) to offer two-year Licentiate and Master of Arts programs in Theology.

Later, on 3 September 1984, the institute was officially inaugurated by Rt. Rev. Bishop Medardo Mazombwe, who was then the Chairman of AMECEA.

CHIEA was formally opened by Pope John Paul II in August 18, 1985.

In 1986, the Graduate School of Theology initiated negotiations with the Commission for Higher Education in Kenya toward the establishment of what would become the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

The Institute obtained the “Letter of Interim Authority” as the first step towards its establishment as a private university in 1989.

After three years of intensive negotiations between the Authority of the Graduate School of Theology (CHIEA) and the Commission for Higher Education, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was established.

The climax of the negotiations was the granting of the Civil Charter to CHIEA on 3 November 1992.

This marked the birth of the university as a private institution.

The university expanded significantly in the 2000s, establishing the Faculties of Science and Commerce in 2002, and the Center for Social Justice and Ethics in 2003

The Faculty of Law in 2004, and the School of Continuing Professional Development in 2009 followed closely.

That same year, it opened satellite campuses in Eldoret and Kisumu. In April 2013, CUEA launched a new campus in Nairobi’s central business district at I&M Tower along Kenyatta Avenue.

CUEA offers several courses across its seven schools.
