Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has alleged that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is planning to infiltrate the Democracy for Citizens Party by secretly fielding a government-aligned “mole” candidate in the 2027 Kirinyaga governor race.
Speaking during a parliamentary address on May 26, Cherargei stated that UDA is the largest political party in the Mount Kenya region and that they will not allow any individual to masquerade.
“And as a government, Mount Kenya is a stronghold of UDA. We will not allow anybody or some individuals to masquerade. We are going to have our candidates in UDA and also in DCP, but they sing UDA at night. So, we will do that,” said Cherargei.
Cherargei also accused DCP Chairperson Rigathi Gachagua of running an opposition allegedly driven by financial influence.

According to Cherargei, UDA is the dominant party in the Mount Kenya Region. To maintain dominance, UDA will strategically place its candidate, Gachagua’s DCP, to contest for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He added that UDA wanted leaders friendly to the government elected in the county and that they will ensure that the women representatives in the county win.
He also argued that Kirinyaga remains a key battleground due to its strategic importance within the Mt Kenya vote bloc, especially with Governor Anne Waiguru set to exit after completing her constitutional term.
The Kirinyaga gubernatorial race has attracted a number of high-profile political figures. Former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Wangui Ngirici is among those expected to contest after breaking ranks with UDA and aligning with the opposition.
Ngirici, who narrowly lost the 2022 race by less than 8000 votes, has declared her intention to contest in 2027 on an opposition ticket
Escalating UDA–DCP Political Rivalry
Cherargei also criticized DCP leadership, accusing the party of lacking transparency in its nomination processes. He alleged that the party sells its tickets to the highest bidder to contest for any seat during elections.
“So I want to warn the aspirants under DCP, that DCP is the highest auctioning house. Even I’ve seen some of the Gitungatis, Gitungatis like from Kirinyaga, Murang’a, I’ve seen Garungu Adanwa, the likes of Beto. All of them, they will have to buy the ticket,” added Cherargei.

The senator also alleged that Gachagua’s publicized effort to raise Ksh 2 billion during his recent visit to the United Kingdom had ended in humiliation, claiming he only managed to raise a fraction of his target from the diaspora.
“He told us he was going to raise Ksh 2 billion in London, but I am told he raised only Ksh 2 million, or was it Ksh 1.5 million, because Kenyans within and outside the country knew that this is a political con man and they would not allow him to raise the money. Kenyans do not want the issues of tribalism, gender, or the ridiculing of the Head of State, the President of the Republic of Kenya,” Cherargei said.
However, DCP has consistently defended its internal systems, maintaining that the party leader was needed urgently back home to speak for Kenyans burdened by rising fuel prices. Earlier, Gachagua canceled another planned London tour to personally supervise the DCP nominations for the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
